The average homeowner does not realize that there are two types of sealant from which to choose, either a high quality petroleum based sealant or a low cost water based sealant called coal tar, a product that will actually cause your driveway to deteriorate. Let me try to briefly explain. Since your driveway is made of asphalt it makes sense to use a petroleum based sealant that contains asphalt to protect and rejuvenate the surface, which is what we use, a product called LN-11 Equinox. Gravel is the cheapest way to extend a driveway. Gravel is an affordable, practical option that’s easy to install and perfect for DIY projects, helping you save on labor costs. While gravel doesn’t offer the same durability or finished look as concrete or asphalt, its low cost makes it ideal for budget-conscious homeowners who want a functional solution without overspending.

Asphalt edging secures the sides of your driveway to prevent crumbling and cracking over time. Most driveways have edges with a 45-degree grading. This helps transfer some of the stress from the asphalt to the ground underneath. If your driveway doesn’t have proper edging, the pressure from your car may break down the edges over time.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

Cobblestone is just one of many driveway materials. Other, more economical, albeit less elaborate options include concrete, asphalt, and gravel. 

If you want a material that most closely resembles cobblestone, your best option is bricks or pavers. Both cost anywhere from $10 to $50 per square foot and can be laid in all kinds of patterns. Depending on the type of paver you choose, you can also get a good bang for your buck by investing in durable natural stone.

Gravel driveways are the most economical driveway material, followed pretty closely by asphalt and concrete. At about $1 to $3 per square foot, gravel is about a third of the cost of either of the more common alternatives. But, not everyone likes the look and feel of the material and may opt to pay more for something that looks better.
