The work looked to be ok, although the concrete did not look like that of my neighbors' sidewalks. In February and March, my neighbor and I noticed that some of the concrete had lifted and the stone underneath was visible here and there in the driveway and along the sidewalk. We called Mr. Durham, and he came to view the damage. He told us that we were and quot;two of many of his clients who had complained about the concrete he'd used,and quot; and that he was and quot;very upset with Hempt Bros. (the concrete supplier) and would call them.and quot; He gave us a and quot;mini lectureand quot; on how concrete mixes can be bad, and that this is what must have happened. He later let us know that a representative from Hempt Bros. would be contacting us. A few weeks later, I found a business card from someone from Hempt Bros. and called. He said that the salt from the roads had and quot;meltedand quot; the concrete, that that was normal, and they would do nothing to try to correct it. He also insinuated that shoveling/snowblowing the sidewalks would cause this kind of damage. I called Mr. Durham, extremely distressed, and he repeated what the representative said - completely denying what he said in November about cold weather not being a problem, and completely denying what he said about all his customers being upset and the poor quality of the concrete. The sidewalks and walkways have chunks out of them, and look almost as bad as before we had the work done, never mind the awful condition of the work he did on my neighbor's porch.
Over the next few months, my neighbor talked with him about what he would do to correct the situation. He said he could have his people and quot;patchand quot; the holes, but that the salt would probably pull that up next winter as well. WHO WOULD USE REPLACEMENT CONCRETE THAT ROAD SALT CAN DESTROY??? I can also tell you that we had quite a bit of snow over the winter of 2014, and the sidewalks, etc. were barely visible for most of that winter, despite the snowblowing! So - how did the salt or the snowblower damage the concrete????
After a while, he just refused to call back. This whole experience has been emotionally draining for myself, and especially for my elderly neighbor. We live in a low-income neighborhood - we struggled to save this money, as she did. We thought we asked the right questions, trusted someone recommended by Angie's List, and we lost our money.
Bottom line - we told him we would wait till spring if the winter would be an issue - he said it wouldn't, then said the effects of winter damaged the concrete. What would a normal person call this kind of behavior?
I'm not sure what I would like to try to resolve this situation. He made it clear that he would only and quot;patchand quot; the damage. I believe a refund on the order of 10%, or $250, would be appropriate.
While I would like to avoid any personal attack against Mr. Durham or anyone who works for him, I will never be able to recommend him/them to do any kind of work for anyone who asks.
Additionally, this is our first experience with someone listed with Angie's list - because I am now out $2,500, and will probably have to spend that amount to fix the problems, I can't in good conscience recommend Angie's list to anyone as well, which is extremely disappointing, as well.

I doubted the value of a staging, especially since the house already had been on the market for several months with minimal activity, but Betty assured me that with a proper staging I?d get an offer within a month. I was very skeptical of her claim, but I also was anxious to sell. Welllll, now I?m here to eat some crow... I think it was just under three weeks after the staging that I got an offer, and we came to terms within just a day of the initial offer. I?m convinced Betty?s staging work was what made the difference, and it really was a big difference. Prior to the staging the townhouse looked like an average sort of bachelor pad (unsurprising, as I?m an inveterate bachelor). Post-staging it was hard to discern that a man even lived in the place. The change really was that dramatic. Indeed, I am so impressed with her work that I?m hiring her again as an interior decorator for my new house. Her rates are excellent, she is a pathological perfectionist, and she really, really knows her stuff. She charged just **$80** for a complete home cleaning and $700 for a full staging, furniture and all. If you check around, you?ll see that those prices are extremely competitive. Betty also was a joy to work with. She was consistently cheerful, friendly, meticulous, and efficient. I recommend her unreservedly to anyone who might need an interior decorator, professional home stager, and/or cleaning service. Based on two favorable Angie's list reviews I called and then visited the store on E. Main St. this afternoon. I was hoping to have our two son's birthstones (already purchased and in my possession) mounted into a suitable Christmas gift for my wife. I was happy to see a large banner on the window advertising that this store was also a and quot;Best of Harrisburgand quot; award recipient. I had no idea what could be done with these stone, what form other than a ring might work and if it could be done before the holiday. When I called to inquire, they suggested I stop by the store. I only had a few hours to work on this project before I had to return home to help with my children.
I drove directly to the store and met first with a young woman who tried to help me with my question. After leafing through a few catalogues looking for a ring setting that might tastefully and simply display the two stones, she said that the decision ultimately rested with the designer, and quot;himand quot; and pointed to another middle-aged gentleman at the far end of the counter. She offered to give me a call back after speaking with him. She said he had a meeting with another man (who had been waiting patiently at the other side of the store with several cases)- another jewelry vendor. Because of the limited time before Christmas I told her I preferred waiting to find out if they could help me or if I needed to go elsewhere. I waited patiently at the counter, looking carefully through the two catalogues for a suitable setting and then did the same on my iPhone, to find rings that might work. I never got the name of the gentleman I was waiting for but assumed it was Mr. James since everyone seemed to defer to him.
He spoke at length with another woman he apparently knew well and then disappeared into the office. After about 45 minutes I wasn't even sure if he was aware I was waiting for him. I asked the vendor, also waiting, if he had any idea how long his meeting might be. He said and quot;awhile, but he (Mr. James?) could certainly help meand quot; and that waiting (for shop owners to deal with their customers) was part of his job. I was not impatient, but just wanted some idea if and when Mr. James (?) might be available.
Mr. James then came out of the office, looking rushed and impatient. He finally acknowledged that I was there and walked back to the portion of the counter where I had laid my things including the stones I wanted to work with. He seemed disturbed. He started to say to me: and quot;Here's the problem with two stones...and quot; just as my cell phone rang. It was my wife presumably updating me about our children. I declined her call not wishing to give away the surprise of where I was or interrupt my meeting. Simultaneously I went to retrieve the images I'd found on my phone to help with our discussion. This was in the span of two seconds. Mr. James sarcastically asked, and with great offense: and quot;would you like me to wait for you? Do you want to talk on the phone?and quot; I explained that I was just declining my wife's call and looking for some images to share with him and then stopped talking so he could continue. He glared at me and said and quot;Do you want to have a staring contest?and quot; and quot;Are you ready, nowand quot;. I said and quot;no, I was waiting for you to finish what you were going to sayand quot;. I said nothing to provoke him. I hadn't even had the chance to tell him what I was looking to have done. When he repeated it again, looking like he was trying to provoke a fight with me, I gathered up my possessions and left the store.
Mr. James, if that was who I was working with, was rude, arrogant and flatly hostile without any provocation. I have no idea what triggered his behavior. I had never met him before and had said barely three sentences to him.
Worse than the frustration of wasting an hour trying to plan a special Christmas present, I left the store completely upset and confused by the strange encounter.

James Hecker, owner of Artist Touch or Jamie as his plethora of very satisfied clientele call him, was a GODSEND! From our initial conversation, I just knew he was and quot;the oneand quot;. I had been searching for a professional to paint my master bath for quite awhile to no avail. After joining Angie's List I contacted several prospects. Not one returned my call--except Jamie and within two hours of my email! As luck would have it, I caught him between jobs and we set an appointment for a free consultation the following day. Three days later....I had a totally gorgeous master bathroom. Jamie has fun creating his art. It's easy to see he really puts a lot of thought into expressing his concepts, composition, balance, colors, perspective and formatting of each detail throughout the entire project. He has developed his own real signature. A true artiste. Jamie's work is amazing and this is no and quot;faux flatteryand quot; by any means. He takes great pains and measured actions to exceed the expectations and concerns of all his valued clients. He exemplifies this very practice in his excellent talent and skills as a former construction worker, restorative carpenter and fine artist. Not only did Jamie listen to my vision for my home, but he educated me along the way as to artistic expertise. My confort level with Jamie was evident straightaway. He is trustworthy and I had no problems in giving him the key to my home, which I rarely do. Coming home every evening to see what and quot;magicand quot; had transpired that day was a delicious treat! It comes a no surpise that Jamie was recognized as an Innovative Designer, twice featured in the Lancaster Parade of Homes and showcased on the HGTV series, and quot;Look What I Didand quot;. But don't let all that hype fool you, Jamie is down-to-earth and very reasonable and fair in his pricing. His website is awesome! Good thing I contacted him before I saw his website, otherwise, after seeing his beautiful art I may have thought him way out of my price range. Jamie is an artist who stands behind his work and will work with just about any budget. Now's the time to get your home ready for the holidays!! I rate James Hecker an A+++. P.S. After seeing how beautiful my bathroom was transformed, I had Jamie faux my kitchen walls and an old Italian cabinet. Next...the kitchen cabinets! I had seen one of their trucks out on the highway and was pleased to find them on Angie's List with good reviews. I contacted them via e-mail over the 4th of July holiday and they promptly responded. Greg, the owner, called within 24 hours to set up an appt for an estimate the next day. He arrived promptly and quickly made an accurate assessment of the roof and damage. The estimate was very comparable to others that I had received. The job was scheduled to start the following Monday. Greg arrived with team of workers right on time and promptly got to work. The workers were very professional and friendly. They worked straight thru a 90+ degree day for over 12 hours to assure that the house was complete but did not rush thru the job, just to get it done. They had to return the following morning to complete the garage and porch roof, but were efficient in doing so and were gone in less than 3 hours. Jack, the foreman, kept the team moving and checked everything to assure that nothing was left undone. He even sent one of the workers to go get new drip edge instead of using a bent piece. Jack, Tony and the rest of the team kept me informed as to what had to be done and were VERY thorough The clean up was perfect and they left my property just as it was before. Greg showed up both days of the job and touched base with me each time to assure that everything was on schedule and answer any questions I may have had. I was HIGHLY impressed with Easy Siders from all aspects. I am extremely happy and confident with the new roof. They were very accommodating and professional. The day they arrived (Friday before Memorial Day) John and his on site supervisor arrived and methodically opened and inspected every item to see if there was any damage requiring replacement - a 10 - 12 day process. They found one item requiring replacement and I ordered it immediately. On 5/31- the agreed upon start date - John and two of his guys arrived. By noon, EVERYTHING had been removed from the kitchen.They made every reasonable effort to control dust and debris. The next week was spent, repairing existing walls and ceiling, rewiring the kitchen for greatly enhanced lighting, modifying our baseboard hot water heating and related work. One major repair involved the closing of an opening in the kitchen wall for a no longer used AC unit. At total of ten recessed and quot;canand quot; fixtures were installed into the ceiling along with LED/CFL specified dimmer switches. The crew's suggestions for location and wiring were always spot on. The walls and ceiling were painted with two coats of paint (we specified the color); new woodwork was installed around doors and windows and also painted.
The new cabinets were installed and doors and drawers were adjusted. We subcontracted for a vinyl floor to be installed and John coordinated that event. At the same time, the sub-contractor we chose for the counter top came in and made a template for the three new counter tops..The remainder of the work flowed very smoothly. The final major work involved installing tile for the back splashes. This work was also done carefully. They also added a decorative tile given as a gift to my wife.
John had estimated 2.5 weeks to compete the work; it took 13.5 work days. This in spite of a 4 hour power outage during the time the flooring contractor was laying the vinyl and an unexpected need to replace our electrical panel.
Throughout the entire time, John and his staff were pleasant, polite, respectful and very knowledgeable. They worked carefully and made every effort to protect the new cabinets, floor and appliances as they worked. They were very direct and clear in answering any questions. As they found minor issues, they would call them to our attention and offer alternatives. It was pretty clear that they made efforts to do things the right way the first time without shortcuts.
After the guys left for the last time, we found one of the new dimmer switches had failed. I notified one of the workers who came back and immediately took care of the problem. It took two trips to his supplier to find a dimmer which worked. Though he had other worked scheduled, he worked steadily and in good humor to correct the problem."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/pa/york-haven/john-kauffman-carpentry-reviews-6280902.htm"},"position":10}]}
