"We had an excellent experience with Plymouth Landscaping! We hired them to complete a deck removal and patio install, with some plantings around the perimeter. Joe and his team were always available to answer questions, and we had a LOT. Our yard is small and sloped and they came up with brilliant solutions in order to utilize the space we were working with. Jose, Arturo and Carlos were super knowledgeable, professional, cleaned up every evening before departing. I would highly recommend Plymouth Landscaping for your backyard projects!"

Customers say: True professional

"Needed some new landscaping in my back yard. Gave John an idea of what I wanted, he came back with several suggestions and pictures of each, I selected from his suggestions and everything was planted within a couple weeks exactly as I wanted. John is always responsive, helpful and customer focused. Have recommended him to several friends and will continue to use him for my landscape/yard needs."

"I had this company maintain my lawn last year. They were here on a set day each week which made it easy to plan my activity. Their work was excellent. I gave them a 4.5 for one category because they were unable to cut a boggy area of the property and I had to do that myself. To be fair, this situation was discussed with them and it was a mutual agreement that they would not be responsible. (It would have been a difficult task due to heavy rains and poor drainage that persisted most of the cutting season.) I hope that this season the service will be as good as last! "Josh at Northwestern was very reliable and installed my block retaining wall and related landscaping including stone top soil plants shrubs resulting in a quality finished product. And the best part is that there was no resulting damage to my driveway and lawn when using the mini-excavator because Josh took the necessary precautions. I am very pleased. I highly recommend Northwestern!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Most experts recommend a quarter-inch layer of compost for best results, and you will need about .77 cubic yards of material per 1,000 square feet. To measure how much compost to use, take the square footage of your yard and multiply it by .77, then divide that number by 1,000.

If you live in an area with heavy rain or you like the idea of an extra layer of cushion under your feet, you may want to consider adding additional layers under your grass. There are pads that are purely for comfort and ones that can help accelerate drainage for those heavy rains.

Environmental considerations include native plant selection, wildlife habitation, erosion prevention measures, and managing water runoff patterns to protect the lakefront ecosystem.

As much as you might try to keep a healthy, nutrient-rich lawn, you still may notice signs of St. Augustine decline (SAD)—a viral disease that discolors your grass blades. St. Augustine decline looks like:

  • Discoloration in the leaves (chlorosis)—leaves appear yellow and splotchy

  • Decline in growth

  • Leaves turn black within 3 years

  • Grass appears less vibrant

  • Grass begins to thin

  • Root rot

  • Grass takes longer to recover

When planting, it's best to leave several feet between a house and a juniper bush. Many juniper varieties will become quite bushy and require space to grow. Juniper branches that come into contact with siding can damage the home's exterior over time. Also, some juniper bushes have aggressive roots that can put pressure on a home's foundation or basement walls.
