"I would give Phil a 20 star rating. He gave me a brand new kitchen. Put flooring in my living room. Excellent work. I have some more that needs to be done and Phil's the one. He suggests things. Makes it look really nice."

"We hired Paul to do a kitchen remodel, which included removing 2 walls, converting from an electric to gas range, modifying windows, and adding a large island. The work was done well and we were impressed with his team’s attention to detail. Our new kitchen is beautiful!"

"Mike was very knowledgeable about granite quality (including what colors would best complement our kitchen) and the installation process. He and his staff were able to educate us about the process in a way that ultimately helped us to make good decisions throughout the process. He brought in different staff that were very good at their particular roles in the countertop installation process (measuring and creating templates, plumbing and installation of sinks and faucets). The finished project was stunning. I would definitely recommend Mike to others interested in installing granite countertops."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

Yes, onyx is more expensive than granite. Its higher cost is due to its rarity, delicate nature, and the specialized care it requires. While granite countertops typically cost between $2,000 and $4,000, onyx is considered a premium material. Its luxurious, translucent appearance and unique ability to be backlit also contribute to the higher price. In terms of durability, granite is a hard, durable surface, whereas onyx is more delicate and can be damaged if not handled carefully.

You don’t need a cutting board. In fact, cutting is the original purpose of butcher block countertops. That said, wood is porous and can harbor germs. You’ll need to clean your countertop thoroughly after use. Knives can also scratch the surface. This adds to the patina of the wood, but not everyone likes the look—in which case, you may want to use a cutting board.

You most likely purchased a quartz countertop because it won't stain or etch like marble. However, etching can still happen depending on the quality of the quartz and whether it is repeatedly cleaned with harsh chemicals or exposed to acidic spills. Remember, while quartz is more resistant than natural stone, just like Superman when faced with Kryptonite, it is not indestructible.

Butcher block countertops typically last around 20 years, and sometimes longer, with proper maintenance. This lifespan is comparable to granite and longer than laminate. Key maintenance tasks include regular cleaning after every use and resealing, ideally once a month. You can also sand and resurface the countertops to remove imperfections like deep scratches, stains, dings, and scorch marks. The longevity is also affected by the thickness of the wood strips used in its construction; thicker strips are generally more durable.

Most homebuyers value standard counter height (34–36 inches) over bar height (40–42 inches).
