Small jobs welcome

"AMJ did a fantastic job disposing of my old deck and building a new one down to the footers! The whole crew was easy to work with and showed up when expected. All the cuts are clean, and the deck is a show stopper. I have gotten so many compliments on my deck. Iâ m glad a chose AMJ to build my family a new deck!"

"The handyman did an incredible job restoring my 50-year-old shed. It looks so good that it appears as if the entire structure was torn down and completely rebuilt. I am extremely impressed with the quality of their work!"

"They were wonderful! They contacted me immediately about the job and stayed in communication until their arrival, which was on time. They got right to work replacing my broken window and were quick, did the job right and cleaned up afterwards. They were also very pleasant and easy to work with. I could not have expected any more than the excellent job that they did. I highly recommend them!"

"Airtite was initially responsive. They also had good reviews (non-Angie's List) and established relationships with local banks. I did not select Airtite through Angie's List but subsequently noticed them on Angie's List. Based upon my initial conversations with Airtite, I felt that they were honest, capable, and that they would do the job I wanted done properly. I did not meet with Airtite personally (they did not come to my residence). Airtite did not provide me with an estimate because I was unable to obtain the financing required for what I wanted to do at that time. Airtite did offer the option of an unsecured loan to cover possible other smaller projects but I declined to have any work done at the time.

Exterior view of the in-progress attached garage addition build. As you can see, the necessary siding was removed from the existing home so we could attach the garage build.

Front view of the log cabin entry room addition highlights the stunning front door with dual sidelights.
Back view shows how much the new build towers above the existing one-story homes in the neighborhood.

"The project went well. Mark Bond is a very knowledgeable and skillful craftsman and problem solver. He also is a cheerful "People Person" who cares for his clients and their projects. The project site was always left clean at the end of the day. His assistant was a hard worker."

Barndominium Builders questions, answered by experts

It is almost always more affordable to buy an existing home than to build a new one. Building a home involves numerous costs, including labor, permits, inspections, utility hookups, and brand-new materials, finishes, and appliances. Additionally, new construction loans can have higher interest rates than traditional mortgages, and property taxes on new homes are often higher, increasing long-term costs. An exception is a DIY house build, which can be cheaper than buying an existing home if you do the labor yourself. While building is generally more expensive, a new custom home offers complete control over the layout and design. Furthermore, new construction is typically worth more than a comparable pre-owned home and may provide a better return on investment if sold quickly.

In the U.S., original and converted carriage houses are most often found in New England, New York, and other parts of the Northeast. New construction carriage houses can be found across the country, and are often added to properties with Colonial-style homes for additional living, storage, or work space, although they can be found in many different styles.

If you’re building a pole barn in place of a traditional home, lenders usually don’t offer traditional mortgages for these structures. You can also expect higher insulation costs and building permits may not be allowed in your area. Even if you’re just using a pole barn as storage or as a shelter for animals, these structures are less durable than steel buildings and require more maintenance.

Concrete blocks are the cheapest way to base a shed. However, the space in between allows critters to go under, burrow, and even damage your shed’s frame. For a more pest-proof option, consider building a shed base with gravel or paver stones. Both options are fairly affordable and easy enough for a DIY project. For gravel, you can build a wooden frame to contain the loose material.

The lifespan of a barn is typically 40 to 60 years, but with skillful construction and proper maintenance, it can last up to 100 years. The actual lifespan depends on several factors, including the barn type, materials, usage, and climate. For example, the posts of a pole barn should last 50 years or longer, but if the structure is used for livestock in a rainy climate, it may rot within the first decade. Custom designs with high-end materials tend to last the longest. To get the best estimate for your barn's lifespan, you should consider its material type and intended use.
