"Hired Buddy for complete bathroom remodel on June 12. My bathroom still has nothing that is usable. He painted my tub (one coat) and left stripes and brush marks. Piece mealed trim around the walls of the shower along with unfilled nail holes, holes left in grouting and caulk, no trim on right side of tub, new flooring that wasn’t popped into place correctly and too close to the walls. Was unable to to hook up a new double vanity from original one sink vanity, he said it was out of his realm. Left all trash for me to dispose of. I have pictures of everything in my bathroom and am willing to share. I have to hire an electrician, plumber and another contractor to complete the room. Has not returned any voicemails, texts or emails since he got paid. He is a one person company and solicits random help on Facebook."

Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing questions, answered by experts

When deciding between stripping or sanding kitchen cabinets, the short answer is it depends on the condition of your cabinets and your end goal for them. If the cabinets are in fairly good condition and don’t have several layers of paint on them, sanding is a good option. On the other hand, older cabinets with more blemishes or marks will benefit from paint stripping, since it will give any future finishes a clean slate.

If you spill wood refinishing oil, wipe up the liquid quickly without spreading the stain and then use soap and water or a stain remover to get rid of the spot. Since the product is oil based, using a detergent like dish soap or a thinner like mineral spirits will help take out the stain. You may need to repeat this process multiple times to remove the stain.

To prepare for cabinet refinishing or refacing, it’s important to remove all items from the cabinetry in question. In addition, clear any clutter from the room, whether it's the kitchen, bathroom, or otherwise. Be sure to have additional cabinet materials, such as cabinet hardware, lights, and glass inserts, ready for your cabinet installer to use.

Finally, if you have pets, ensure they are in a safe, separate location away from your cabinet professionals, who will bring materials in and out of your home during the process.

It’s important to sand your cabinets before you paint them so that your paint job will hold. However, in some cases, you might be able to skip the sanding. For example, you could use certain types of paint, like mineral or chalk paint, that don’t require heavy sanding. You might also be able to use a high quality bonding primer or a liquid deglosser which allows the paint to stick without sanding.

It is possible to refinish your own cabinets, but it’s usually a better idea to leave the work to a cabinetry professional. Refinishing cabinets is a time- and labor-intensive process that involves stripping the old finish off, sanding down every face of the cabinets and doors, and then adding multiple coats of paint and protective finish. Not only is this hard work, but getting the final product to look clean and professional is challenging. An expert will be able to make quick work of the project and leave you with a final product you’ll love.
