"Solarshield Metal Roofing was very professional from the sales team to the contractors from start to finish. Everyone I spoke to was eager to help with any questions I asked and had an understanding whether it was their department or not. They were very respectful of my property and finished in a timely manner. Once the job was finished it was like they weren’t even there aside from a stunning new roof."

"Johnny painted all of my aluminum siding, blended the downspouts, and kept my green trim and roof free of paint. In addition, he removed some shutters I couldn’t reach and completed the job in a timely manner. He was polite and tidy!"

"Jim & Debbie are fantastic to work with. They're reliable, very communicative and very professional. They also have an excellent eye for design and were very helpful in selecting a color for my roof and in making suggestions for other small improvements I might make to increase curb appeal. They explained some of the issues with my roof very carefully and also gave detailed explanations of the potential solutions. I work from a home office and they were very courteous of my schedule and tried to minimize noise when I had important calls or meetings. I'm a single female homeowner and appreciated that I never felt talked down to (something I've encountered often with other contractors)-- and they always carefully listened to me. My roof looks fantastic! I'd hire them again in a second."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The least suitable roof for solar panels is a wood shake roof. An electrical mishap with your solar panels could start a fire on the roof, so some areas don’t allow solar panels on wood roofs. You don’t have to let a wood roof stop you from going solar. You can replace your wood shakes with shingles. Installing the panels on the ground is another option.

A roof pitch that’s too shallow won’t shed runoff as quickly, so you have an increased risk of water intrusion through the seams between your roofing materials. In colder climates, snow and ice will accumulate more easily on your roof, which can add enough weight to cause roof collapse and structural damage to your home.

In most cases and locations, roofs with a single layer of asphalt roofing shingles won't require roof removal before installing a metal roof. However, underlayment may be necessary on roofs with moderate shingle damage. Heavily damaged roofs or ones with multiple shingle layers will most likely require removal before a metal roof can go on.

Fall is widely considered the best time of year to replace a roof. The moderate temperatures are ideal for roofing crews to work and for new shingles to seal properly. Additionally, autumn weather is often drier, reducing the risk of weather-related delays compared to the rainier spring season.

While spring is also a viable option, the higher chance of rainfall can slow down the project. The main drawback to a fall installation is that it's the peak season for roofers, which can lead to higher prices and scheduling challenges.

To potentially save money, you could consider scheduling your roof replacement during the summer or winter off-seasons. However, both seasons have significant disadvantages. Extreme summer heat can make shingles too soft to handle, while winter's cold, snow, and ice can create dangerous working conditions and prevent shingles from sealing correctly, as they typically require temperatures above 40-45°F.

Roofing jobs can be expensive due to the required materials and the dangerous nature of the labor. The cost to repair a roof ranges from $390 to $1,920, with an average cost of $1,150, depending on what kind of roof you have and any accessibility concerns. Replacing a roof is much more expensive at $5,890 to $12,800.
