"Rowdy Williams and crew were fantastic. Rowdy himself always answered the phone. There was a lot of grading on this job, including a compound drainage path, which Rowdy designed. They team worked fast and produced a great looking driveway. They did the job the day after I signed the work order. The price was very, very good. Finally, this is a family operation. I could not have been more pleased."

"They were in the neighborhood doing another job and told me they could pave the gravel driveway at one of my rental properties. I had gotten prices a few years ago, and even given the time difference, they beat the price by almost $1,000. They did a good job prepping the area and put in an asphalt driveway the same day."

"Central seal coating, and mowing is owned and operated by Travis Wilson. Licensed and insured company. We Couldn’t be more happier! Driveway and parking lot looks great. Travis was very thorough with his explanation for work he was performing am my residence. Travis and his employees are very respectful, honest and hard-working. Central seal coating and mowing does exceptional work. Travis is an independent owner/operator contractor, who funds all of his own materials prior to it being done. He just asked to be paid when the job is complete and you’re satisfied with central sealcoating and mowings work. He guarantees his work and stands behind it. Central sealcoating and mowing was very professional. Don’t expect to pay a fortune to have work performed by central Sealcoating & mowing.I recommend central seal coating in mowing for all your asphalt needs"

"Paul stopped by my house a couple of months ago to see if I needed to have my driveway resealed. He told me he had installed and resealed the driveway for the previous owners (we'd been in the house for less than two years). I told him at the time that I was also interested in maybe expanding the driveway as well. He stopped by again today as he was doing another job in the neighborhood to see if I was ready for the reseal. He also recommended that I not expand the driveway, which made me realize that he was not out to see how much he could make off me. Anyway, I threw a bit of caution to the wind (I usually research these things to death) and had him go ahead and do the job while he was there. I could not be happier with the job he did. He cleaned the driveway, sealed the cracks with a high-quality filler, and did an excellent job of spreading the sealer all the way to the edges without getting any on the sidewalks, garage, and lawn. He also gave me some good tips on how to make sure that it cures properly. Compared to the other prices I'm seeing on AL, it also looks like I got a good price.

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Driveway paving costs around $4,500 on average, but depending on many factors, you could pay anywhere from $2,500 to $6,600 or more. The size of your driveway will usually be the most significant factor, with more square footage increasing your costs. You can expect to pay between $2 and $15 per square foot for paving services. Some other factors that play a role include the following:

  • Quality of the materials

  • Contractor’s experience and expertise

  • Site preparation and grading, if necessary

  • Layout of your driveway

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

New asphalt goes through two stages: drying and curing. Drying typically takes 24 to 72 hours, after which the surface is solid enough for light use like walking or careful driving. While you may be able to park on it after 72 hours, the surface is still soft and should be treated gently. Full curing is a much longer process, taking anywhere from 30 days to a full year for the asphalt to reach maximum strength. During this extended curing period, the asphalt is susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles, sharp objects, and high temperatures. Factors like weather, the specific asphalt mix, and application thickness all influence drying and curing times. For the most accurate timeline and to ensure the longevity of your new asphalt, it is always best to consult with your installation contractor for their specific recommendations.

This creates a risk for your driveway to fail after asphalt curing because it doesn't have a lasting bond with the surface. In order to get asphalt to perform as intended, it's necessary to prepare the dirt surface correctly first. The loose soil base under the new driveway must be compacted until it is stable enough to support the weight of the asphalt.

If your driveway is cracked, you can repave it with a process called asphalt overlay. Overlay is more cost-effective than a full replacement but is better suited for minor cracks and issues. If you have major cracks or other problems like water pooling, asphalt overlay isn’t your best bet. Plus, paving over a cracked driveway only extends the lifetime by about 10 years, whereas replacing it would start the clock over completely to give you up to 30 years.
