Customers say: True professional

"Eric and his sons Mark and Matt built a two story extension onto our log and vinyl shake home, and made the addition seamlessly appear as if it was part of the original construction. The end result is beautiful, inside and out, and we get so many compliments on the vaulted ceiling in the new construction - and a vault that they added to part of the original house. They were very pleasant to work with, and even were able to build a temporary interior wall which allowed us to stay in the house during construction. We highly recommend them."

Architects questions, answered by experts

The design phase varies by project size and complexity; initial ideas can take weeks, while extensive plans may extend to months for complete detailing.

A structural engineer's report provides a professional assessment of a property's structural condition. It typically includes an evaluation of the foundation, key structural elements like roof trusses, floor joists, studs, beams, and rafters. The report will also contain a detailed description of the engineer's findings, often supported by photographs, and provide recommendations to correct any identified issues. Depending on the scope of the inspection, it might also include an assessment of property drainage, potential issues from environmental conditions like extreme weather or tree placement, and an estimated time and cost for any recommended repairs.

A floor plan is a less detailed illustration showing a building or room's layout from above, including elements like windows, doors, walls, and fixtures. It offers a simplified view for homeowners. In contrast, a blueprint is a more detailed, to-scale architectural drawing that includes all parts of the building plans, such as structural elements, construction details, and utility schematics. While a floor plan can be a type of view within a blueprint, the complete blueprint contains all the necessary details to turn the plan into a reality.

The best way to start designing a house is to know what you want before designing. Making a list of your biggest priorities in a home will help. Designing a house without an idea of what you need or want in a home will lead to many trials and errors that could make it harder to figure out what you need in your design.

You should have an architect involved in your project from the very beginning. They’ll be able to direct your vision into workable plans, and they can advise you on potential problems right from the start. You may be able to save money by not using an architect, but larger projects will go much more smoothly with an experienced pro directing the process.
