"The team rewired 2 floors with old knob and tube and added some outlets in my 1929 home. The also installed a new over the range microwave with ventilation to the outside of my home. The crew was punctual and helpful. They communicated with me throughout the job, accommodated extra adds on I requested, and they were very clean. The work was done well and done on time. The price was more than reasonable. I would definitely call pricelight again!"

"They were good. They're price were really good for what we wanted to have done. As far as the work, they came in and they had part of our power back on half way through the day and they had the rest of it on before they left that evening. They had to come back out to test the generator after the propane company came and tested out. They came out and did everything."

"Dan and his team did a fantastic job. My initial issue ended up being a lot more elaborate than initially anticipated but I was so pleased with their initial work I hired them again to address the larger system issue. I absolutely recommend and will definitely look to hire them again next time I have any electrical problems."

"

He arrived about 15 minutes earlier and went through the house to find out exactly what was needed for the job.  After the two hours I had him remain to complete the work I had to finish one floor of the house.  I also discussed him returning to the house to do other floors.

Dave's began with the completion of wiring on three lights we had in the basement.  The old lighting was pulled and new wires run for outlets.  A few junction boxes that were old and had bad wires were pulled and the wiring that was replaced was pulled out so it didn't confuse us or interfere with the remaining work.

After the switch for the lighting was installed and a plug that had to be taken out removed and replaced Dave's fixed the issues I had with my security light.

Dave and his helper were polite, professional and proficient in getting the work done.  That is why I kept them on the job until the floor was finished.

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.

While natural gas generators are costly, they’re a great option for standby power due to the reliability of natural gas as a fuel source. Unlike other fuels, natural gas is delivered through underground pipes, making outages extremely rare and less likely to be affected by the elements. As long as the area isn’t prone to earthquakes, they offer an unlimited supply of natural gas that doesn’t degrade over time or require storage in tanks.

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.

In some situations, yes. Never try to put biofuel into any home generator without checking the specifics first. If a generator has the ability to run on diesel, it can also run pure biofuel (the clear kind made from seed oils, for example). But if you are using biofuel made from animal fats or vegetable oils, the generator will need significant modifications before it can handle a sludgier type of biofuel.
