Scavello Handyman Services is a handyman / home repair service serving the Royersford, PA area.

"We have been scheduled for 2weeks for him to install laminate floors for us. He knows we are on a time schedule and agreed to have them done Friday and if needed Saturday to complete. We get a text message today stating "Just giving you a heads up if we get a lot of rain with the hurricane this weekend and I might not be able to do your floor. I do all water damage flood work." We answered this text with that we have been scheduled so that should take priority. He never responded! Now we are in a position that we have to try to find someone we can count on to do the floors with just 4 days notice! This is the most ignorant and irresponsible situation I have ever had to deal with a contractor. I am beyond disgusted at the audacity, knowing that we have been scheduled for two weeks already!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

Yes, professionals re-mount and realign antennas for optimal signal reception.

Yes, you can hammer a nail into a wall stud. But before you do, it’s important to confirm that you’re actually nailing into a stud—and not wiring, pipes, or ductwork. To check, find a few more studs in the wall, then measure to make sure they’re either 16 or 24 inches apart.

Yes, joists are considered structural, as they support the flooring or roofing above them and help distribute the load to the beams, which, in turn, distribute that load to weight-bearing walls or foundational supports directly below them. Joists not only help distribute the load evenly to your beams, but they also provide direct support to the subfloor in flooring systems, which helps reduce creaking and the risk of uneven flooring.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.
