I called and texted until he responded that he was too busy and I should find another company. Well I don’t have a backup landscaper or a lawnmower myself. Totally unreliable and unprofessional."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

The cheapest landscape rock is gravel, pebbles, or decomposed granite. These small rocks are great for affordable driveways and walkways. If you’re looking for larger rocks as a building material, you can get fieldstone affordably, especially if sourced from somewhere in your area.

First, dig a hole that’s the same depth as the root ball and wide enough for the roots to spread out fully. Before placing the tree in the hole, pour water in to help get rid of any air pockets in the soil.

When filling the hole back in, opt for a 1:1 ratio of organic compost with the soil left over from the ground. Do not use potting soil, fertilizer, or chemicals of any kind, as these can stress out and kill your newly planted tree.

No, mulch itself does not necessarily attract termites even though it’s usually made of shredded wood. Some types of mulch like cedar or cypress resist termites because they’re toxic or unappetizing to the wood munchers. However, when the mulch is deep enough, say three inches or more, it creates a perfect habitat for insects of all kinds to build nests.

The main benefit of topsoil is that it enriches the soil with nutrients that help your plants and garden grow at a healthy rate. Topsoil improves how well your soil drains water and gives it a more fertile texture, so that not only do you get better planting, but weeding is also much easier.

Yes, gravel comes in different sizes, from fine powder to pea-, coin-, and even golf ball-size. Pea gravel is about 3/8 inch, while crushed stone gravel is about 3/8 to 4 inches. Most companies use a numerical system to assign a size, with the smallest being #10 and the biggest being #1.
