"Nathan was professional and thorough. Completed everything in the bid on time and for the agreed upon price, which was very fair. Very good communication and follow through. We have a steep vineyard site that required extensive brush clearing and grading, along with a driveway that needed gravel replacement and resurfacing. We plan to use Nathan again for some annual maintenance of our site and can recommend him to others without reservation."

"Heavy D excavation took 20 years of overgrowth on my 30 acres and turned it into a park like setting. Cody created roads, removed brush and trees that were sick or dead, and took care to keep anything healthy. I am creating a campground and he carved out all the spaces, taking care to keep things flowing and aesthetically pleasing. The fire roads were so good, even the fire marshall was impressed. I recommend Heavy D excavation!"

"Jerid and his crew did an amazing job on our site. From clearing the old out and prepping for the new home. Everything was done with professionalism. Jerid always had some amazing ideas and suggestions. No questions were stupid questions. Between Jerid and Brad there was an answer. We would definitely hire S4 again for our projects. We absolutely love how everything turned out. We really can't say enough about Jerid, Brad, Ty and Daydra!!"

"My yard hasn’t looked this good in years! It has been covered in blackberries and another invasive species for the past 4 1/2 years since my husband’s death which was my main concern, but they had gentle suggestions for the rest. My favorite was the incorporating of my collection of large white quartz and granite river rock from the banks of the Rogue River from our many vacations on the coast and the use of my mother’s (an avid gardener) statues which they put to good use. (Didn’t realize I had so many of the latter!). They unburied some of the plants I had forgotten about, readjusted climbers, saved my roses, daylilies, a rhodie I thought was dead, and a lilac I thought some previous worker had killed, put weed fabric over every space before replanting the few plants I bought, showed me how to replant with new plants. I’ve had neighbors comment on my “new” front yard and friends on my back yard. And I really enjoyed them!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can excavate in the winter, but it might make the job harder. Frozen ground is harder to dig, and snow or ice can make the work site more hazardous. A contractor may need special equipment and techniques, such as ground-thawing methods, to break through frozen soil. Although winter excavation is possible, it may take longer and be more costly than excavating during warmer months.

No, a ditch isn’t a trench. A ditch is an open, relatively shallow channel that’s carved out of the ground and used for drainage purposes. In contrast, a trench is a deeper excavation that’s entirely underground. Trenches have many uses, including gas lines, sewage systems, and electrical wiring. Unlike trenches, ditches don’t get filled back in with dirt after they’re dug.

Drilled wells have a pipe sticking up that’s covered in a plastic or metal casing. On the other hand, a dug well will look like a big hole in the ground and is more similar to what you’d see in a fantasy or Western movie. If you want to be sure, contact the city for documentation on your property’s construction and excavation history.

There are many ways to cut through roots when digging, especially if your trencher doesn’t seem to be removing the roots. First, use a shovel to expose the roots. Then, use gardening shears to clear out smaller roots or a reciprocating saw to remove larger plant roots. If you plan on keeping the plant, avoid cutting any roots over 2 inches thick.

The best type of soil to build on is a mixture of sand and clay, known as loam soil. Loam soil has the best combination of these soil types to build a foundation on. The clay particles help with water retention, so it won’t erode like sandy soil might, and the sandy particles help with drainage, so you won’t see unsafe soil expansion or have an increased risk of leaks from water sitting against your foundation.
