"I donâ t as in a time crunch. My house was closing in just a couple of days and there was a repair that had been started by someone else, but not finished - it needed to be finished ASAP. Russ came to my rescue! He responded to my request quickly. Explained his process and exactly what I needed to complete the repair correctly without having to spend too much money. I found him kind, trustworthy, reliable, and very knowledgeable - and willing to explain exactly what he was doing!"

"Steve and his crew were great to work with. We had a fire at our home and choosing a pro to rebuild was scary. Steve made it easy. The completed job looks fabulous. Would really recommend Ironwood builders for all your building projects. Steve's honest and timely."

"Our two-story home was in dire need of exterior painting and weather damage repairs. Elite Enclosures team is skilled and responsible, polite, positive and efficient. Adam Martin strives to communicate with us, so that we have full understanding of the project. The crew are polite, friendly and good humored, but constantly working. The weather damage required a new man-door frame installation and the double garage door needed dry rot removal and mold removal, including siding replacement. The resulting repairs are exceptional and we are impressed. We have hired the same business to replace a dry-rotted fence and build a new gate, all done well!"

"I worked with this group to build a new fence. They responded quickly to my request for a quote, were responsive and thoughtful when I had questions and completed the project quicker than expected. Their work was thorough and the fence looks great. Their team was respectful and kind when doing their work. Overall had a great experience and would work with them again."

"I looked everywhere to try and find someone that could build a Murphy bed for me (I had the hardware kit) and finally, I found Chris. This has been an absolute pleasure from start to finish! The communication was excellent. We talked over what I wanted and he made it happen. He also gave me some options that allowed me to save some money which I really appreciated when material prices kept going up. He was always considerate of my time as we tried to maneuver through my continually changing work schedules, etc. Honestly, I am so thrilled and it is even better than I imagined!"

"Moreno Legacy Construction did an EXCELLENT job on removing shelving, repairing the walls and painting our laundry room. They were fast, efficient, and very fairly priced - willing to work with my budget. I would highly recommend them for your future projects. You won't be disappointed!!!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Enhances property value, ensures safety, and provides a sound basis for future construction.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

A few signs that you need a new door frame include:

  • The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.

  • You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.

  • You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.

  • You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.
