Most sprinkler installation companies can get your system installed in one day, especially if they use trenchers and other machinery to speed up the process. However, it could take two to three days if you have an exceptionally large property or if you need lines and sprinkler heads running through garden beds. In that case, the labor will take longer to dig longer lines or to use manual tools to excavate in the more delicate areas. Your professional should be able to provide you with an estimated project timeline during the planning stage.

You can find irrigation lines whether you dig or not. If you decide to dig, do so near valve boxes and around sprinkler heads. Once you find the first pipe, you can map the system from there and use spray paint or tape to mark the pipe layout throughout.  

If you don’t feel like digging, aside from getting a map from the maker of the irrigation system, you can still find irrigation lines by locating the valve box and following a line back to the head sprinklers. You can also use a water-detection device or a metal detector, which will work if the lines have metal tracer wires.

If you don’t currently have an irrigation system, cost is one of the biggest drawbacks of adding drip irrigation. You’ll likely spend several hundred dollars to set up your system. Plus, installation can be tricky—especially if you have a large or sloped yard. Drip irrigation systems also need ongoing maintenance, which you don’t really have to deal with if you’re just using a garden hose or portable sprinkler to water your lawn.

You should get estimates from at least three utility installers to help find the best company or contractor. When you are gathering estimates, make sure to look at what each quote includes. Instead of opting for the lowest rate, look for the rate that is in your budget but offers the most comprehensive service to make sure you are getting the best value. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for references to supplement any reviews you find online.
