Yes, you can use a hose instead of a sprinkler system to water new sod, but it's important to ensure even coverage. Attach a sprinkler nozzle to the hose to disperse water evenly across the lawn. This method allows for more precise control over the water distribution. Remember to mimic the watering schedule recommended for a sprinkler system, providing your new sod with the necessary moisture for healthy growth.

Each sprinkler zone should have five to 10 sprinkler heads. The water source for sprinkler systems has an average of 30 to 50 PSI and 5 to 8 GPM. On the lower end of these ranges, you’ll need fewer sprinkler heads per zone. The number of sprinkler heads per zone you need ultimately depends on the size of the zone, the water pressure, and the flow rate.

You can run 5 to 10 sprinklers on one line, depending on your home’s water pressure and flow rate, and the performance of your sprinkler heads. In some cases, your zone might only be able to support two or three sprinkler heads if they use a lot of water.

The pipe trenches for an in-ground irrigation system should be at least seven inches underground, but no more than 10 inches. Seven to 10 inches is the sweet spot for irrigation line depth because the pipes can crack if they're too close to the surface. If the lines are installed too deep, it becomes much harder to detect leaks and the condition the pipes are in.

The color code for the common sprinkler wire is white, and then you can assign the remaining color codes to the rest of the wires for different sprinkler zones. For example, you could use red for the first zone, then blue for the second, and so on.

Color-coding helps you keep track of which wires go to specific zones so that you or a pro can address any issues or repairs quickly. Check your local electrical code for any requirements regarding sprinkler wire colors.
