"First, I had them deep clean my flagstone patio, using their super-powered hot-water pressure washer, using a bleach solution. Absolutely incredible result, getting out stains no one else I hired had been able to get out with normal cold water pressure. The results were so good, I had the wash the entire house and gutters using that same setup. The light-colored trim and gutters just glowed! With two great results, I had them do an even trickier job: refinish my hardwood porch/deck. This involved careful sanding and bleaching of the wood, ridding it of the terrible job the last guys did, and then precisely oil-staining the tigerwood decking - a much more difficuly job than cedar staining, as hardwood does not absorb excess stain. It must be carefully brushed out to eliminate pooling. The result was absolutely spectacular! The decking looks like hardwood flooring - exactlythe effect we wanted when we installed it but had been unable to achieve with other contractors. Weâ ve had neighbors stop by and ask about it already. Travis knows his stuff and is a meticulous, scrupulous craftsman. You can count on him to do the job right and at a very fair price. I will definitely use Upright Exterior Services next time, and will recommend them to anyone who asks."

"Jay has done multiple jobs, such as replacing light fixtures, replacing a garbage disposal, hanging a large picture, and building a fence. He has been reliable, knowledgeable, patient with questions, and gives a fair price for the work performed."

"Joshua was one of many contractors to come out and give us a bid once I discovered the sill plate and joists and some subfloor on the north side of my house was rotted out from moisture and powderpost beetles. His bid was not the cheapest but he gave me the most extensive and comprehensive explanation of what was going on and how to repair it. It was by far the most thorough bid and included more work then the other bids I received. Most importantly Joshua came across as very professional and honest. The work was completed as described plus a little more as he discovered slightly more rot once the bottom of the siding come off. Joshua did all the work himself and was very courteous and professional throughout the week + it took to complete the job. He had excellent communication throughout the project and would always leave the workspace clean at the end of each day. I will be hiring Joshua again for any projects bigger then I what I could do myself."

"We had an unusual project to replace a collapsed front deck, install a boardwalk and a new set of stairs to be one cohesive entryway to our front door - and to ensure it complemented existing stonework. The Prism crew built a beautiful entryway that exceeded our expectations. We are very happy with it and it is so well built it will last for decades."

"Kosman Painting did a fantastic job staining our deck! We were so happy with the results that we hired them to paint the exterior of our home as well. Kos and his team were a pleasure to work with. He helped us choose the right paint and stain, and the attention to detail was excellent?from carefully protecting the hardware to making sure everything looked great when finished. We?re very happy with how both projects turned out and highly recommend Kosman Painting. We look forward to working with Kos and his team on future projects. Thank you!"

"We just had Pete (Legacy Deck and Fence – owner) tear down and replace our 20-year-old cedar deck. Pete was very patient with us while we were trying to decide what material we wanted. He provided us lots of knowledge insight to the pros and cons of each material. We finally decided on mahogany wood with an aluminum rail and let Pete get to work. Pete is a true craftsman and it’s obvious that he really cares about the quality of his work. The finished deck just looks absolutely fabulous!! We couldn’t be happier with the results. If you are looking for a an easy person to work with, a knowledgeable and skilled craftsman, and want quality results at a competitive price, I highly recommend Pete and Legacy Deck and Fence"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

Pressure-treated wood contains preservatives that give the material internal protection from rot and pests. Untreated lumber won’t last more than a few years unless you choose a more expensive wood, like cedar, that naturally stands up well to moisture. Composite decking can outlast wood but is more expensive and doesn’t look as natural. Keep in mind that you’ll need to seal any exterior wood product to protect it from the elements and other forms of external damage.

Composite decking might cost more upfront, but it delivers value in terms of durability. Unlike wood, composite material resists common deck problems such as rotting, fading, warping, and all the other things you don’t want a deck to do. The extra processes lead to a higher price tag, but you’ll save big in maintenance costs down the road.

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.
