It’s possible to pour concrete if the temperatures are expected to dip below freezing at night, but you need to take some special precautions before you do. Most importantly, you need to make sure your concrete won’t freeze, so the best thing to do is enclose the area and heat it. You should also make sure you’re using cold-weather concrete that’s designed for pouring in cold weather. Use accelerants to help speed up the curing process and avoid cold temperatures from resulting in weak concrete.

Thicker concrete is less likely to crack due to extreme weather changes. At a minimum, concrete slabs should be at least 4 inches, but if you’re worried about the concrete cracking under the weight of heavy machinery or from the freeze-thaw patterns of your climate, you should use even thicker concrete. Yes—as long as the area has been properly prepped. Different self-leveling brands and compounds have their own specific instructions for preparation; some may require that you add primer or grind the surface. Without proper preparation of the surface, the compound will not be able to fully bond to the concrete and fill the cure as a separate layer, which makes it prone to chipping.

It is not advisable to pour concrete directly on dirt. Even compacted soil—known as a subgrade—is not strong enough to maintain the form of concrete. You can, however, pour concrete over concrete as long as the overlay has proper bonding agents and the slab below is clear of damage.

Concrete dries faster in the heat than in the cold, but when concrete cures too fast, it can cause weak concrete. It’s best to pour concrete when temperatures are between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, watering it five to 10 times per day for seven days (unless you pour concrete in the winter). Slower cure times, such as when pouring concrete in cold weather, can cause strong concrete, but you need to monitor the temperature drop and moisture levels. Avoid pouring concrete when temperatures are below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
