"During the torrential rains we had in Portland last week (2/9/19), the skylight we had started to leak. We called around to several places recommended by Angie's List and not only did NLS (Jaime) call back within ten minutes, he came out to the house within an hour to see what he could do to stop the leak. What incredible service!! Due to the rains, he was only able to tarp the old skylight to temporarily stop the leak. He also noticed an issue with our roof that the tarp wasn't able to cover. We still had a leak but it was much less. We ordered a new skylight but dfue to the nonstop rain, he couldn't get up on the roof (we have a tile roof and it's really slippery in the rain) to replace the skylight, but he came back at literally the first break in the weather to replace the skylight and patch the roof (it still needs more work to be permanently fixed, but that will wait till the weather gets much better). We are now leak free! We are extremely happy with the service, professionalism and response. We'd definitely recommend them!!"

"DLights service was exceptional...they were on time for meetings and, when the day came to perform, they completed the job, replacing 3 skylights, within hours...and completed the clean up too. We had a leak in one of our skylights and Juan came over that night to cover the leaky skylight. Had a contactor to fix our ceiling too...so unlike businesses today."

"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"I have gotten 4 different offers from different companies and Clear Vision beat them all. Derek, Sales person, was very professional, accommodating and honest without the sales pitch that you normally hear from other roofing companies. Crew Showed up on time. finished the roof in 3 days and were very professional and cleaned up throughtout the installation process. Price was also reasonable without the high pricing that comes with the nonsense jargon from other companies."

"The 2 workers worked really well together and quickly (2 days) - they did the doorframe in our old house (which had a problem they fixed) , fixed the old small deck, added handrails and made it smooth and ready (replaced boards, etc) for painting. Also finished the sub-floor gaps, etc. in the new room to get it ready for the carpet installer. Very pleased with work and price."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.

Yes, you can add blinds or shades to both roof windows and skylights, but roof windows tend to have more options available. Retractable skylight shades are popular on both options for added privacy, light control, and heat reduction, although they’re more expensive than manually-operated blinds or shades. If you have a roof window or skylight set in a high ceiling, a motorized or solar-powered skylight window covering is probably your best bet.

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

The type of lighting you choose can have a big part in the aesthetic and function of your space. Ambient lighting refers to indirect or diffused lighting that evenly reaches most areas of the space. Task lighting illuminates specific areas, such as a workspace. Accent lighting draws attention to details in your home, and decorative lighting draws attention to itself.

Prevent future skylight issues by conducting regular inspections, ensuring gutters are clean to prevent water pooling, applying protective sealants periodically, and trimming overhanging branches that might cause physical damage to the skylight.
