A well does not run out of water because the groundwater continues to refill with rainwater that seeps through the ground. If the well is too shallow or there is a drought, a well can run dry or be short in supply. It’s important to have a well deep enough to source enough water for your home’s use. The ideal depth of a septic drain field is 18 to 36 inches below the surface. You can check your own septic tank, but take precautions. Locate the access lid, usually buried a few inches underground, and remove it carefully. Never enter the tank, as toxic gases can be fatal. All of that being said, a professional inspection is safer and more thorough.

The heavier cement collects at the bottom to form a solid seal, pushing lighter materials like mud and fluids up toward the surface. With proper maintenance, most types of septic systems—including mound, evapotranspiration, and constructed wetland systems—can last up to 40 years. To keep your system running as long as possible, follow basic septic tank upkeep guidelines, like pumping your septic tank every three to five years and only flushing human waste and toilet paper.
