"We were so impressed with Home Comfort! We had a lot of questions when doing our research and Aaron and Chris showed exceptional patience, coming out to our house twice to go over the different product options available to us and describe the installation process. We chose Home Comfort over the other 4 contractors we interviewed because we liked their professionalism, their ratings on Angie's List, and their O% financing option. The installation went like clockwork. Just as had been described to us, first the electricians came, who were so friendly and efficient. Then came the installation crew who worked steadily through the day, pausing to give me updates along the way. Both the furnace and air conditioning unit were installed carefully, with great attention to detail. We appreciated that they covered our floors and cleaned up thoroughly when they were done. They also fixed the insulation in our attic that had fallen down, before running the coolant lines through. Last came Johnny who fired up the system and made sure both the furnace and air conditioner were communicating properly with our new thermostat. The office staff then contacted me to schedule an appointment with the city inspector, who came out the next day and signed off on everything. They did a fabulous job with the bidding process, installation, and following through to make sure the city inspection happened in a timely fashion. Rockwool insulation can last up to 100 years, but just how long this insulation lasts in your home depends on how well it's maintained. Poorly installed insulation may last only 30 years, so be sure to regularly inspect your home's insulation for water damage, settling, and pests to give your insulation the best chance of having a long lifespan.

You don’t need to remove old insulation before adding new insulation. As long as the old insulation is still in good shape—not wet, physically damaged, or moldy—then you can stack new insulation on top of old insulation to get a compounding effect. You can also mix different types of insulation, like adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batt insulation or installing rigid insulation boards over rafters in your attic that already have batt insulation installed. If your existing insulation is very old or damaged, though, you’ll likely see more benefit from removing it and replacing it instead.

Radiant barriers and insulation serve different purposes, so one is not inherently better than the other. Radiant barriers reflect radiant heat, helping keep spaces cool, especially in hot climates, while insulation slows heat transfer through conduction. For optimal energy efficiency, it’s best to use both together. 

Radiant barriers can enhance the performance of insulation by preventing heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. The choice between them depends on specific climate conditions and the building’s design requirements.

According to a report from Energy.gov, radiant barrier installations can save between 5% and 10% on your energy bill each month that your HVAC cooling is in operation. That fact can mean savings of up to more than $325 per year for homes that experience frequent direct sunlight and high summer temperatures. 

In most cases, the building code in your location will determine the minimum amount, in R-value, required for your home's walls, attic, and other spaces. For attics, the minimum R-value amounts start at R30 in the south, R38 in mild climate locations, and R49 in northern states and cold western areas.
