The vast majority of hinges are symmetrical, and either side of the hinge can go on the door or the frame. The difference between a mortise latch and a tubular latch is how they're mounted. A mortise latch has a single integrated lock body. One long rectangular space is cut into the door to contain it. A single keyhole is used to unlock both the dead bolt and latch from the outside. A tubular latch is a standard setup with a dead bolt separate from the regular spring bolt latch.

Leaving vents open but closing doors in unused rooms will probably not save money on your energy bill. Closed doors prevent the natural flow of air throughout the home, which could reduce the efficiency of the overall HVAC system. They could also restrict airflow into and through the return vents, making the HVAC system less efficient.

A door swells up when there’s a lot of moisture in the air. Wood doors are porous, and the elements can cause them to expand with humidity and contract with dry air. Prevent swelling by coating the door in weather-resistant paint, which creates a barrier to seal out moisture. Otherwise, go with a water-repellent finish after the fact. On the plus side, this problem will go away once the weather changes.

An interior French door should last you anywhere between 30 and 50 years, while an exterior French door unit will last around 15 to 30 years on average. Exactly how long your French doors last depends on the quality of the materials you choose, with vinyl doors lasting far less time than fiberglass, metal, and clad-wood doors. Upgrading to shatterproof glass can also improve the lifespan of exterior French doors.
