"Josh replied immediately to our request, quickly understood our problem and offered a satisfactory solution. He arrived at our home when he said he would and had everything with him to conclude the job. Josh was friendly, polite and professional and got right to work. We had asked him to work around our quirky dogs and to not leave the door or gate open behind him and he complied without hesitation. Josh walked us through his completed work and made sure we were satisfied with the repair before concluding our business. I would like to add that this was an emergency repair request during the Thanksgiving holiday and josh had the emergency repaired within 4 hours of the initial contact. We are very pleased with the service that Allied Mechanical and Plumbing provided us and we would not think twice before calling them first. I would recommend them to anyone. Thank you, Josh - I hope you finally got some warm turkey and stuffing. Sincerely Robert and Sonia."

"My project involves replacing a tub drain shoe in my claw foot tub. The first visit to remove the old shoe has been accomplished and the next step will be to order/buy a new drain shoe and then the plumber will come back to install the new shoe after it arrives. The work so far has been done quickly, competently, and at a reasonable price."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

You can DIY your toilet flapper replacement if you’re up for a small plumbing project. Turn off the water to the toilet, open the tank lid, remove the chain from the lever, and unhook the flapper. For a new, adjustable flapper, adjust it to the right setting according to your toilet's gallons per flush rating. Hook the flapper in place and install the chain with 1/2 inch of slack.

Basement toilets don’t always need a pump. However, it is the most common setup because plumbing systems use gravity to move waste away from the home. Basement toilets often sit below the home’s main sewage system, and installing a sewage ejector pump pushes the wastewater and sewage up to the main sewer line. Alternatively, you can use an upflush or macerator toilet that breaks down the waste and pushes it straight to the main sewer line rather than via a sewer line from the bathroom.

The lifespan of a toilet can vary significantly. While the porcelain body itself can last up to 50 years or more with proper care, most plumbers suggest an average functional lifespan of 10 to 25 years, and many homeowners replace their toilets after about 20 years.

A toilet's longevity is influenced by factors like maintenance quality, hard water buildup, and damage to the finish. It's also important to note that internal components have much shorter lifespans than the bowl; for example, flappers may last only a few years, while fill valves can last around 10 years.

Even if an older toilet is still functional, consider upgrading to a high-efficiency model to save on water costs.

DIY is possible for minor repairs or replacements. Professional services ensure proper installation and leak prevention.

What you include in your bathroom remodel will depend on your budget, personal preferences, and the current condition of your bathroom. Bathroom renovations often involve changing out the shower or tub, faucet, showerhead, tiles, flooring, mirrors, sink, cabinets, and vanities. You may also want to upgrade the wallcovering, adding new wallpaper or paint.
