GrassRoots is licensed with Landscape Contractors Board (#9202), bonded and insured, and also carry worker's compensation insurance on all employees.

"I had big plans for my back yard and initially thought I could do most of the work myself, despite not being a fan of yard work. I wanted a new patio with walkway around the house, to remove most of my lawn and replace it with other plantings, and eventually get a cover for my deck. Well, after a couple years of chipping away at it, and then a pandemic, I decided it was finally time to just hire professionals. In May I met with Phil from GrassRoots to go over my current yard and my vision of what I was looking to do, he offered many great suggestions (including using stamped concrete instead of paver stones for the patio and path). We went back and forth over the design details, taking our time to get things right (after all, I was in no hurry). He let me know that the work would be done in phases, each time squeezing between their other jobs. He hands me off to Tim who oversaw the work. Starting in mid-October the demo team cleared out the existing lawn to prep in the first day. A week later the team came out and spent two days laying the gravel base and installing the retaining walls for the concrete pour. Two weeks later the concrete team poured and stamped the concrete, and then removed the retaining walls a couple days after that. At that point the softscape team showed up and blew in the dirt, installed the new sod, and got really excited showing me the plantings they picked out as they placed them in their pots around the yard to get my okay with where they had arranged everything. A few days later the carpenters showed up to install the new deck cover, which looks absolutely stunning! After the first rain, I noticed that the runoff from the deck cover was splattering the fresh bark they had installed, so they came out and added some decorative gravel there to catch the rain. All in all, it was a fantastic experience and I'm so glad I finally decided to go with the professionals on this project. I'm looking forward to the spring when everything starts to grow, and in a few years when the bushes fill in."

Fountains questions, answered by experts

Every one to three months, you should perform regular fountain maintenance, including draining, cleaning, and rinsing the components of your fountain basin and the pump and tubing to prevent algae and other buildup. Fountain maintenance also includes keeping the appropriate water level and removing debris like leaves, insects, and twigs from the water to avoid clogging the pump. You can also hire a professional landscaper to clean your fountain for around $50 to $150 per month on average.

Yes, it’s possible to DIY a plunge pool and shave labor costs off of the project total. If you’re considering a DIY build, keep in mind that you will be responsible for pool installation and landscaping (which may require excavation). This type of DIY project is best left to particularly handy homeowners who have prior pool installation experience.

Installing an outdoor water fountain costs $2,700 on average, not including the cost of the unit. Prices range from $150 to $10,650, depending on your location, the type of fountain, size, and accessibility to the site. Self-contained fountains and water features recirculate the water within the unit. Depending on size and features like multi-tiered cascading bowls, they typically cost from $50 to $5,000. More elaborate fountains with waterfalls and ponds can cost from $450 to $10,000 or more.

When deep cleaning your koi pond, transfer fish to a clean, uncontaminated container at least one foot deep, like a large bucket, tub, or kiddie pond. Fill the container with their existing pond water to avoid shocking them, and place the container in full or partial shade. When it’s time to reintroduce them into the pond, slowly add the new water to the container before adding the fish and container water back into the pond.

One of the most important parts of building a pond is digging the right depth. Your pond needs to be at least one to two feet deep. The specifics of the depth will depend on factors such as the placement of the pond and whether you plan on having fish. If you have fish in your pond, it will need to be at least two feet deep.
