"In the early Spring of 2022 we hired Millspaugh to build a 10X24 feet porch over a deck. They gave us a bid which seemed reasonable, and began work shortly thereafter. We were very pleased with all aspects of their work. They were prompt, exactly on budget, on schedule, and very nice people with whom to deal. We highly recommend their services! Sincerely, Dr. J. Robert and Vera M. Moore, Springfield Oregon 97478"

"Taylor was great to work with. He and his assistant exhibited professionalism with high attention to detail. Taylor was quick to respond to any questions I had and helpful with explaining the process as it went along. Even though the job did finish over the original bid, the overall cost was still hundreds of dollars less than all the other bids I received. Taylor also invoiced fairly and accurately the cost of materials and labor each day so it was nice to be able to track the cost and, now I have a beautiful, quality fence."

"James came ready to do a job to help me be able to walk up and down our stairs since i have a badly injured leg and cannot use the stairs without railings. I might add that we have a 100+ year old Craftsman home and James understood that and his work building and painting the railings shows that he "gets" that we wanted something that matched our historic home. YES, we would hire him again."

"Adam and Jacob removed the old fence and installed a new fence that really improved the property. We were so pleased with the work we hired them to also install new doors. They did an outstanding job on both the fence and doors!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

A few signs that you need a new door frame include:

  • The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.

  • You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.

  • You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.

  • You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.
