"Fred and his crew were nothing less than completely professional and highly skilled. I asked Fred to do two shower upgrades to my 1966 home, one was a tub to a shower buildout and the other was a plastic insert to a nice tile and rock shower. There was pretty bad rot damage in the plastic insert shower but Fred and his crew took care of the situation with no issues. Ultimately the wife and I changed our minds on a few things and asked Fred and his crew to do more then was originally asked for, they rolled with the added work and completed the work efficiently and to an extremely high level. I could go on and on but I think the proof is in the pudding as I am asking Frederick James Construction to rebuild my deck, along with a few other projects. Frederick James Construction the Best is the Business as far as I am concerned!"

"They installed a beautiful patio and walkway for us and the crew was professional and worked hard and fast. They wanted me to be satisfied with the job and worked with me when there was a misunderstanding. I would highly recommend them. There was a problem with the final bill but the owner resolved it to my satisfaction."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

If you’re handling your tile removal yourself, seal the room using painter’s tape and heavy-duty contractor bags to prevent dust and shards from escaping. Use a claw hammer or a pry bar and a mallet to get behind the tile and pry it away from the floor or wall. Once your tiles are all removed, sweep everything into contractor bags for disposal, being careful not to overfill them. Make sure you wear a dust mask, safety goggles, and work gloves to keep yourself safe from injury while you work.

Yes, unfortunately, it is normal for wall and floor tiles to crack, especially when you drop heavy items on tiled floors or place heavy objects on them. Tiles are also more susceptible to cracking when ceramic tiles designed for walls are installed on floors, as these are often not strong enough to handle heavy loads from foot traffic and furniture. Similarly, tiles that are installed incorrectly, lack adequate subflooring, or have other installation problems are prone to cracking. To avoid these problems and the inevitable repair and replacement costs they bring, always hire a professional for tile work and follow best practices for installation.

Yes, you can tile a shower as a DIY project, and you can save hundreds of dollars in labor costs by doing so. However, you’ll need to rent or buy quite a few tools and supplies for the job, including a saw, tile nippers, and a new shower pan. In terms of the work itself, you should be prepared to tackle a variety of different tasks, including measuring and ordering materials, removing old tile, waterproofing the wall, adding rows of tile, grouting, and more.

Grout lines should typically be between 1/8 to 3/16 inch thick. This ensures enough room for the grout to dry properly and makes them wide enough to look clean and professional. If grout lines are too small, it can be easier to see imperfections in the spacing.

The easiest tile size to install is large tiles, and they’re easier to install than small tiles—the job is faster and simpler when there’s less placing, adhering, and grouting to do. However, when tiles get really big, they’re more difficult to handle, cut, and fit. Standard floor tile sizes are 12-by-12 inches, 18-by-18 inches, and 12-by-24 inches.
