"I have a cabin that had an old exterior stain product on it that was very susceptible to mold. The house exterior aged very poorly and was covered in a black mold. I hired valley painting pros in southern oregon to take care of it and they handled it perfectly. They safely stripped the mold and old stain off the house while keeping the wood in great clear shape. I love the stain color choice they picked and the product is very resistant to bugs and mold. Throughout the process they were very timely and professional. I would hire them again if I need more exterior restoration or staining work done."

"They were timely. When they came, they stayed until the projects were done. This work included fencing, deck work, and laying new pavers. Oscar and his crew did a great job."

"Clay estimated 4-7 working days. We were facing weather, and the crew hustled and were done in 3 days. Prep work was excellent. They power washed, sanded where needed, and primed and painted. They used drop cloths, covered up our deck plants to protect, and when they were done, there was no mess left at all. After the rain blew over, Jason (crew lead) came back and saw that the rain had marred the metal gutter, so he and the crew came back and resanded the gutter and repainted it. Our house looks brand new, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the results. We would call Brotherhood Painting the "Best of the Best" in the Rogue Valley! Thanks guys!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood, as this helps prevent the surface from cracking. However, it is crucial to wait for the wood to dry out completely from the chemical treatment process before applying a finish. If the wood is still wet, the paint will not adhere properly. The drying time can range from weeks to six months. To test if the wood is ready, drip some water onto a board. If the water is absorbed, the wood is dry enough for painting or staining. If the water beads up on the surface, it needs more time to dry. You can build with the wood while it's still wet, but you must wait for it to dry before painting.

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.

Avoid using cleaning products that are abrasive or contain bleach or acidic components on composite decking to avoid discoloration. Early-generation Trex decking isn’t designed to handle pressure washer cleaning—and if you use them on second-generation boards, always use a low setting to avoid the risk of damage that can risk voiding your warranty.

If your biggest concern is making sure your deck doesn’t show dirt, opt for a darker neutral color that blends in well with your surrounding landscape. A rich brown or dark grey are both good options that work with a variety of house colors. A high-quality acrylic paint is easy to clean and maintain, so it might be worth spending the money on.

Adding a second coat of stain to wood can even out the color to some extent, but it won't drastically alter the hue if the initial application is too light or too dark. It's more effective at enhancing the richness of the color rather than significantly changing it. Ensure the first coat is dry before applying the second.
