"David evaluated my issue and was very honest and forth coming in the fact that though I had been told I needed to replace my sewer line under my house that my line was OK. Though he did not do the hydro flush I did need he referred me to another company to have the work done. I will be using hm on any future plumbing jobs and would refer him to anyone needing an honest business man to do a job for them."

"Professional, courteous, and even fun. Joshuah resolved the draining issues with two of our sinks quickly, expertly, and efficiently. He also gave us a tip to not use Drano, but use natural enzymes about once a month to keep the drains from clogging."

"Outstanding! I got bids from 4 different companies. Steve @ Preferred was on the high side, but understood the complexities of the project better than the other companies. He knew the steps that were needed to make sure we had a great lawn that would drain well & do well over time. The ground cover had huge dead patches and was weed and weed-grass infested beyond repair. It was a huge time suck to maintain, always looked half-dead and needed to be replaced. Once the ground cover was finally killed off, it had to be removed, the ground 'tilled, and the contaminated soil removed (from the chemicals used to kill the remaining ground cover). Then they had to bring in sand for draining, and a giant truckload of soil to put on top of that. Steve made great suggestions along the way, like removing the half-dead street tree, and a low bush that wasn't doing us any favors, and moving around some of the rocks in the dry creek bed, and bringing in 1 more large rock. I trusted him completely, and in the end was so glad that I did. His suggestions were spot on, and now the yard looks 2x the size, and the house looks cleaner, brighter and happier. One neighbor even asked if I painted the house! I can't thank Steve enough for helping us through this transition. It's exactly what I wanted & envisioned, and it's beautiful. Thank you!"

"Robert was hired to re-do our back yard from the ground up.  He designed a wonderful layout in his head, then used orange paint to lay his vision out on the ground for me to contemplate.  That was great because it allowed us to do a little tweaking here and there to make it perfect.  Then he and his workers went to town, building an amazing 4-foot high dry-stack rock wall, installing other hardscapes, a new fence, lighting, irrigation and all plant and lawn materials.  Additionally, he "fluffed up" other areas of the side and front yards by adding some small rock walls, fixing the line of some existing flagstone and replacing troubled dirt-filled drainage areas with river rock.  It really is stunning.  It is so great  to have the owner of a business on the job every day, arriving when he says he will be there, and never, ever, forgetting any small detail.  Having been so impressed with their skills and dedication, I have hired Artistic Landscapes to do all the maintenance work on the new yard as well.

Storm Drain Installation questions, answered by experts

If you know the damage a hurricane can cause, you know how essential it is to protect your home. Getting ready for hurricane season can go beyond roofing reinforcement and extend to other external entry points where water and wind could damage your home. You may want to install hurricane window film to protect windows and glass doors or invest in storm windows. Storm windows cost an average of $12,000 and offer impact-resistant window surfaces with a better chance of fending off high winds.

A screen door needs at least two hinges, though most have three or four hinges. The amount of hinges depends on the weight and size of the door. The heavier your door, the more hinges it will need for support. Exterior doors, which are sturdier than interior doors, have the most hinges.

Homes need solid construction to survive a hurricane, including these parts:

  • A secure foundation at the right elevation for your home’s flood threat level

  • Hurricane straps to secure your home’s foundation

  • Waterproof basement sealant or rubberized sheeting that directs water away from the foundation

  • A strong, well-attached roof that’s firmly secured to the framing

  • Shutters or roll-down window protectors that you can close outside to prevent broken windows

  • A garage door bracing system to keep high winds from caving in or tearing off the door

  • Deadbolts to keep your exterior doors in place against wind pressure and floodwater

A storm door should be the same size as the front door. Both doors will fit into the same opening on the exterior of the home, so you can expect the storm door to be the same size as the front door. Most doors will be about 32 or 36 inches wide and 75 or 81 inches tall, although you can customize your door sizes.

If you’re replacing an interior door, it’s best to get the work done in the summer or winter, as door installation professionals are the least busy during these seasons and might charge lower labor costs based on the decreased demand. You can also potentially save money by hiring a professional to install your exterior door during these seasons, but most homeowners wait until the spring or fall so that the extreme temperatures don’t put added strain on their HVAC systems while the door is being added or replaced.
