"The owner of the company responded promptly and was available to snow blow my long driveway in a very timely manner. This was the first time snow blowers were used on my driveway. I can see the importance of using that method (instead of a plow) right after a snow fall and before the ice is packed down. In the future I will be contacting Ryan in a more timely manner myself!"

Small jobs welcome

"We had lined up a snow removal company for the season, but before it even snowed, the company we had scheduled called us out of the blue to tell us their equipment was broken for the foreseeable future. Since I work at a church and needed some extra help to clear our parking lot before our Sunday service, I gave Bend Labor Trade a call, and they came out the next morning before our service and got our parking lot cleared! They did an excellent job, and just in time for our Sunday morning meeting."

"They did a terrific job of clearing my yard of pine cones & needles. They pruned all my plants. They killed weeds and cleaned up many unsightly areas. They are now my bi-monthly gardening service and still are doing a great job. I am very pleased with their service and glad I hired them. Linda Hansen"

Snow Removal questions, answered by experts

In most cases, it is best to leave icicles on your roof and allow them to melt naturally. You should only consider removing them if they are heavy enough to cause damage to your home or pose a risk to people below. Since removing icicles can be dangerous, it is recommended to hire a professional for the job if you have immediate concerns. To prevent the issue from recurring, you should address the underlying cause, such as improving your home's insulation or installing roof heating coils.

While it’s less common than on other kinds of roofs, yes, ice dams can form on metal roofs. Metal roofs, particularly those with snow guards installed, can still accumulate ice at the roof edge, although ice dams on metal roofs are less likely to cause roof or interior damage than on traditional asphalt shingle roofs.

Yes, but it works best with lightweight snowblowers, the single-stage models or electric versions. Also, you need to have a rubberized intake edge on the ground and preferably rubberized auger paddles, not a metal version. Otherwise you may chip or damage the surface as you work. When it doubt, let the snow lie.

You can also use a snow blower on leveled gravel, but only if you carefully adjust the intake height so it doesn’t kick up the gravel and turn it into flying missiles.

DIY snow removal is entirely free, except for the cost of a shovel. However, it may not always be the best option for large driveways and areas with heavy snowfall; it’s strenuous work and can take a long time. Other wallet-friendly ways to remove snow include rock salt, hot water, a de-icing agent, or a leaf blower.

If a big freeze catches you by surprise and you don’t have any deicer to hand, you can reduce the chance of taking a tumble by laying gritty, anti-slip materials. Some natural, readily-available options that don’t melt ice but offer traction underfoot include sand, wood shavings, kitty litter, and fireplace ash.
