"It took two times to get things completely done because a simple mistake was made during the original installation of the five posts. After a horrendous hassle with the company making the turned cedar posts (in PA), Bradley brought the last post to us for pre-installation painting. Because the hassle with the company resulted in our getting the complete set of posts free, we opted to have Bradley install the railing system to show our support of him.  I watched and learned some great lessons as he and his helper Bill made short work of the rails and balusters.  When done everything was cleaned up like they had never been here. The only reason "punctuality" is marked a B is he had to cancel the scheduled day for the second trip and showed up a bit late on the reschedule. I never knew why and figured it was probably none of my business.  I would rehire Happy Construction with no reservations.

"It did not start out auspiciously.  I had originally called them up and requested that they schedule me for a Friday, any Friday, after 11 am (this was to give me time to get to the work site from my home, it is a rental property 75 miles distant). I didn't have a pressing requirement to get the work done soon, and I wanted to be present when they started to explain the scope of the work.  They assigned me a day about three weeks distant for an 11am appointment.  As I drove to meet them at about 9:30 on the appointed morning I got a call from my tenants at the work site, telling me that the electricians had already showed up!  I was not happy about this, and told them to direct the workmen to start on some of the simpler items.

The two men they sent were competent, and quickly wired up the bathroom fan.  However, I was disappointed to see that they used switches that didn't match the color of the other switches in the room - I had switches that would have matched the color, but I had not arrived yet.  They progressed through my punch list of items, and quickly accomplished everything but the three-way circuit.  This turned out to be a difficult problem; a previous tenant had started to re-wire the circuit, and stopped short of finishing the job.  As a result there were wires going to places through walls that could not be identified.  I went up in the attic to see the situation, and I could see that this was a nearly hopeless job to untangle without committing to opening up walls and running a completely new set of wires.

I decided to just get out of the way, and let them puzzle on it for a while.  To my surprise, they worked it out and got a three-way upstairs / downstairs light switch circuit working!  I was quite impressed by this bit of detective work!

On balance, my experience was a bit mixed.  The scheduling mixup really bothered me, and resulted in some things being done in a way that I would not have approved had I been on-site.  On the other hand, I admired their tenacity in getting that attic circuit figured out.

Would I hire again is a tricky question; I learned that I was paying their time to travel a fairly long distance compared to some electricians that were more local, so on the basis of cost alone it probably makes sense for me to use a different company."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.

Costs depend on generator type, labor, and additional wiring or transfer switch requirements.

These advanced generators use a key fob or a smartphone app to remotely start, which is ideal for getting power back on immediately without venturing outside. This feature is more common on whole home generators, but you may be able to find it on large portable generators, too.

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.
