"Pleased overall with the bathrooms and kitchen countertops. Very polite, prompt, took care with walls, mirror and cabinets. They could improve on the finer details like polishing and sealing backsplash tops, small chips on edges and 1/2 inch measuring mistakes on several overhangs, things only I would notice. Looks beautiful overall. Great job for the money."

"Matt and his crew did an outstanding job remodeling our kitchen. They removed and replaced our tile floor, countertops, backsplash, and painted the cabinets in seven days. Matt's attention to every small detail was obvious. If you need remodeling work done, we would highly recommend Allison Stoneworks."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can generally put hot pans directly on a granite countertop without worrying about cracking, as it is a durable, heat-resistant stone that can withstand high temperatures. However, it is still highly recommended to use a trivet or hot pad as a precaution. Prolonged or repeated exposure to high heat can potentially cause discoloration or damage the countertop's sealant, making it more susceptible to staining. Additionally, the heat from a pan can transfer to the granite, creating a burn hazard for anyone who touches the surface shortly after.

Clean with mild detergent and water, and avoid abrasive cleaners or sharp impacts to preserve the surface.

You don’t need a cutting board. In fact, cutting is the original purpose of butcher block countertops. That said, wood is porous and can harbor germs. You’ll need to clean your countertop thoroughly after use. Knives can also scratch the surface. This adds to the patina of the wood, but not everyone likes the look—in which case, you may want to use a cutting board.

The best type of wood for countertops is hardwood. Hardwood is much more durable and resilient than softwood, so it won’t scratch or dent as easily. Oak, cherry, maple, walnut, and teak are all popular options that are relatively common in North America. Some homeowners prefer to use pine or cedar, but make sure to seal your countertop to help prevent damage. Yellow pine fares better than white pine.

The least expensive way to build a kitchen countertop is to choose an affordable material. For example, laminate countertops cost about $1,250, while Corian® countertops cost $4,000 on average. Common wood and laminate tend to be the most affordable and DIY-friendly, which will save you the cost of labor. Otherwise, look for lower-end solid surface countertops or ceramic and stone tile. These cost less than natural stone slabs.
