"I contacted three roofing companies including All Oklahoma Roofing & Construction recently to replace the hail damaged roof on my mother-in-law's 1950's built house. Mr. Cash Sanders, the owner of the company, came out the house to give me a cost estimate to replace the roof. During his inspection, he pointed out that the 1" X 8" decking planks would need to be replaced to bring the roof up to code. While he was there, I asked him about making other repairs to the house including: replacing all the soffit boards and soffit vents; replacing damaged trim on the house; painting the siding and adding rain gutters. After comparing his cost estimate with two others I received, I selected All Oklahoma Roofing & Construction. Mr. Cash's cost estimate to replace the roof was competitive with the other two estimates I received but what set estimate apart was his idea to repair vice replace most all of the soffit vents and soffit boards which would save a lot of money. Mr. Sanders worked directly with the insurance company for approval of the roof and deck plank replacement. This was a huge time saver for me. He was also very prompt at returning all of my phone calls and answering my questions throughout the process. His crew of roofers, carpenters, painters and gutter installers showed up for work at the date and time agreed to and did an outstanding job. When the work was completed, I was very pleased with the results. The crew cleaned up everything after they were done and I looked but couldn't find a single roofing nail in the lawn. The roof looked great, all the pipe jacks and vents were repainted and the soffit vent and soffit boards looked like they were brand new. In the end the house went from looking like a tired old 1950's rambler to looking like a new house. Mr. Sanders is an honest and dependable business owner who maintains contact with the customer throughout the process and his craftsman are extremely good at their job. I highly recommend All Oklahoma Roofing & Construction."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Beyond liquid rubber, homeowners can use sealants, stains, membranes, or tapes as waterproofing options. Oil-based or water-based sealants soak into the wood, creating a moisture-resistant barrier. Waterproofing stains—available in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid colors—add both protection and style to your deck. For heavy-duty waterproofing, deck membranes and waterproof tapes can be applied under the deck boards to direct water away from the structure below. Whatever method you choose, clean and prep the deck first to ensure the best, longest-lasting results.

Yes, it is generally a very good idea to seal your deck after pressure washing. Power washing removes not only dirt and debris but also a thin layer of wood, leaving the surface exposed and more susceptible to weathering. Sealing is almost always needed after this process. After a general cleaning, sealing isn't automatically necessary if the existing sealant is still intact. You can test the surface by placing a few drops of water on it. If the water beads up, the sealant is working. If it soaks into the wood, it's time to apply a new sealant. If it has been a few years, it's wise to remove the old sealant, wash the deck, and reseal for maximum protection.

You’ll want to avoid excessively hot or humid conditions, so it’s best to apply your stain in late spring to early fall. It's also important to watch the weather forecast and aim for days when there isn’t rain expected for at least three days. For new decks, allow the wood to season beforehand for at least four to eight weeks.

Exterior paints contain more volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, making them dangerous when used indoors. Without the free ventilation of the great outdoors, it can take longer for the fumes to dissipate than interior paint. While you may notice the smell lessening more quickly, you should be wary of paint fumes inside for 48 to 72 hours after it dries.

It is not always necessary to remove old stain before restaining a deck. If the previous stain is in good condition and is compatible with the new stain, you may be able to apply a new coat after thorough cleaning. However, if the old stain is in bad condition, flaking, or peeling, it is best to remove it completely to ensure an even surface and proper adhesion for the new coat. Staining over a damaged layer can lead to an uneven finish and poor penetration. For best results, test a small area first and consult the stain manufacturer's guidelines.
