"Great. They investigated the HVAC and replaced a failed 45-5 capacitor. Here's the great part. From my mid-afternoon service call to the time of completion was approximately 1 hour. I have used Freedom Plumbing, Heat & Air for years and they have never let me down. Great team! Thanks guys."

"So far, proposal only. But Brandon McBee is very knowledgeable about HVAC, and he has been great to work with. He actually provided a complete proposal for all new HVAC and ducting before I could complete the floor plan sketch. It's extremely competitive and I hope we will be putting the business with temperature pro."

"Mr. Miller is very knowledgeable. Originally came out to bid new HVAC system and to remove old ductwork and install new ductwork. While he was there he also made the time to inspect and recharge my AC unit as it was not cooling properly."

"Eklund contacted me promptly to setup a time to come out and provide a quote. They were very respectful, polite and informative and provide me a quote right there. Quote was accepted and the work was scheduled for a week from the date of the quote. They arrived on time and got to work. Despite having to spend all morning jack hammering masonry out of the firebox to get the crumbling gas line, they stuck with it and got the job done that no one else I contacted would touch. Great Service and Great work."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The DOE is phasing out AC units with SEER ratings that fall below 14 or 15. The exact minimum rating depends on your region. In the northern United States, new ACs must have a minimum SEER rating of 14, though you can still buy and install older systems as long as they were compliant when they were manufactured. In the southern and southwestern United States, you cannot buy or install older air conditioners with lower SEER ratings. The minimum rating is between 14.5 and 15, depending on the power of the unit.

Your AC might not cool after a power outage because of a tripped circuit breaker, blown fuse, or damage to the compressor or capacitor. If you notice your AC not working after a power outage, in most cases, the breaker has tripped or the system has built-in brownout and blackout protection. Reboot the AC by turning it off at the thermostat, resetting the circuit breaker, and waiting 30 minutes to turn the AC on again.

AC drip pans last five to 20 years, depending on the material. Plastic AC drip pans last five to 10 years, while metal pans can last over 10 years. Plastic AC drip pans are vulnerable to cracking in response to temperature changes. Metal drip pans are prone to rusting over time, which can also lead to leaks.

While most air conditioners can last between 10 and 20 years, they will only last this long (or longer) if properly taken care of. Routine maintenance and inspections help keep your AC unit running in tip-top shape but understanding what factors will decrease its lifespan will also help keep your unit running cool.

Some things that shorten your AC’s lifespan include:

  • Extreme outdoor conditions, like high humidity or extensive salt spray

  • Improper installation

  • Extended run times, either by the unit being too small or the thermostat setting too low

  • Not performing required maintenance

There are a few ways to determine if a vent is open or closed. You can inspect the vent and examine the position of the fins. If there are spaces between them, the vent is open. If the fins are flat and touching, the vent is closed. You can also stand under the vent when the system is running to see if you feel air flowing through it.
