"Skylar did an amazing job on a bath to shower conversion. I was concerned about safety for my 88 year old mom. He gave me great advice on what she needed in the shower. "Getting a walk in tub is expensive no matter who you use. My experience thus far is with installation only and I must say my install went great. It has been over a month and no issues with my tub so I cannot comment on repair process with American Standard."

If you have an alcove in your bathroom, you don’t necessarily need to install an alcove tub. You can choose a drop-in tub and fit the frame to the alcove. This allows you to get a more custom or spa-like look. Think cultured marble or tiling for the frame versus the simpler look of acrylic or fiberglass with an alcove tub.

You need mortar or a premanufactured pre-slope product under a shower pan liner. Some shower pans are pre-sloped, but they still need a base underneath them to support the pan’s structure and the weight of the person using the shower. Installing a shower without a pre-slope creates a high risk of pooling water, leaks, and the breakdown of the shower’s support structure.

In most cases, you can remove your showerhead without turning off your main water supply. You just need to make sure your shower isn’t on before you screw off the showerhead. That said, you may experience a small trickle of leftover water in the pipe. 

If you have an older showerhead, it may be a good idea to turn off the main water supply because this job can put pressure on the pipes. If you have a shower shut-off valve, it will be hidden somewhere in a nearby access panel.

The amount of space needed depends on the size of the shower. For the standard 32-by-32-inch walk-in shower, you’ll need about 50 square inches. The International Residential Code requires a minimum of 24 inches of space in front of a walk-in shower’s entrance. That said, the National Kitchen & Bath Association recommends 30 inches of clearance, which is a bit more comfortable for most people. 

Ideally, you’ll have enough room to open your doors and cabinets without interfering with your shower. This may not be possible in a smaller bathroom.
