"Everything went exactly as David said it would. While the shingles were being replaced, the installers noted that the original builder had used pine trim on the chimney housing and they were rotting. David replaced the trim with cedar (which it should have been originally) and some of the siding at a cost of the materials only. David monitored the work frequently, although his crew is very experienced and didn't need much supervision. I was very impressed with how David explained the extra things that he was doing that many roofers skip. I had complete confidence that I was going to get the most professional work available and that is what David gave me."
"Two of them came out. There was a long list and we were happy to pay more, but I was not pleased when I got home. I wanted the caulking in the shower redone and they did not get to that. There is a gate in a storage thing out in the side yard and the door needed patching. I just did not like coming home. "Excellent work. They took the time and really listened to what I wanted done . The windows were triple-pane and replaced perfectly. One of my windows was a garden window that was a little out of the ordinary, but they were able to replace it with no problems. Siding was beautiful. The detail around the doors, corners and windows was superior to those who had done my siding before. Roofs on my barns were replaced as well as my home and they have never been better. "I recently purchased a Fannie Mae foreclosure, a house with nice potential but quite a mess to get started with. I contacted a couple of names from Angie's List and Roger Allen was so professional from the get go (good guy too), I went with him pretty quickly. He was able to get an estimate together and to my lender soon after I had asked. I'm not an expert on pricing but his numbers were consistent with the other I had received and ended up being accurate by the time everything was done. On small jobs that is easy, on the mess that was my house, quite a challenge. We had problems all around from an iffy septic system, siding peeling away, no hot water heaters, ancient electrical boxes, decor from a generation long past, leaks in the shower/master bath, carpeting that had seen much better days, etc. He was able to take care of everything inside of my budget without any glaring omissions. Even when my wife picked out expensive paints, he was able to take care of the overage. Roger and his people have been great, I'll be using him for any future fix-it jobs in the future for sure."
Vinyl is lightweight, easy to install, durable, and long-lasting, and as long as a professional installs it, it should remain waterproof for several decades to keep your home protected. It can hold out against extreme weather conditions, and it doesn’t make a nice home for any sort of insects. Plus, vinyl is affordable and comes in a variety of looks and colors. When it comes to board and batten siding, vinyl is one of the most affordable material options.
Hail as small as 3/4 inch (about the size of a penny) can cause damage to your siding. When hail reaches 1 inch in size, you can expect to see more cracks, chips, and holes, and hail that’s 1 and 1/4 to 1 and 1/2 inches around will cause significant damage. If you see hail that’s 1 and 1/2 inches to 2 inches or more in size, the damage is likely to be extensive and possibly even dangerous.
Not wrapping a house before installing siding can lead to moisture intrusion, rot, mold, and even higher energy bills. Older houses may have siding installed without wrap underneath, so it’s a good idea to add a wrap layer when it comes time to replace old siding to prevent potential damage from water intrusion—local codes may even require it, so check with your municipal building authority.
You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.
Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.
Some homeowners use caulk on the edges of clapboard siding to help seal it. However, this method invites new problems. With so many gaps sealed, clapboard siding is often unable to drain properly and moisture from rain or other sources can build up inside. This can lead to rot and other issues over time. When repairing clapboards, it’s best to avoid caulking the final product. The exception is trim around windows and doors, which should be caulked to avoid moisture problems.
