Generally, toilet leaking is not an emergency unless the leakage is severe. However, any leakage at the bottom should be addressed as soon as possible because it could lead to water damage to the floors, under the tiles, or into the walls. Leaks at the bottom can also lead to mold growth if unaddressed.

Replacing a main water shut-off valve costs anywhere from $300 to $1,000, or more depending on your project’s specifications. You’ll need to replace the shut-off valve if the size of the pipe changes (as is common with trenchless replacement) or the material used in the new pipes isn’t compatible with the valve.

In North America, pipe measurements are listed as the nominal pipe size (NPS). This measurement refers to the outside diameter. As an example, a 1/2-inch copper pipe has an outside diameter of 5/8 of an inch. If a hardware store lists a pipe as having a 2 NPS, it means that all the pipes with this measurement have a 2 ⅜-inch outside diameter, regardless of wall thickness and inside diameter.

Unfortunately, pipes can freeze when exposed to prolonged freezing temperatures, whether or not you have installed insulation covers. Insulation covers, however, are still an excellent idea as they can reduce the chance of your pipe freezing by keeping the pipes closer to the temperature of the water inside the pipe.

Frost-free hose bibs are undoubtedly worth the investment, especially in regions with freezing temperatures. While they may have a higher upfront cost than standard bibs, the expense pales in comparison to the cost of repairing pipe leaks or the cost of water damage caused by frozen and burst pipes. The added protection and peace of mind they offer make them a cost-effective choice in the long run.
