As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

• Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings. 

• Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard. 

• Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety. 

• Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.

You can add a roof to most decks, but you need to have it inspected first. If your deck didn’t come with a roof initially, it may not be able to handle the weight without some structural changes. You can add additional supports to your existing deck to safely add a roof, and tying your deck’s roof to an exterior wall can help add some structural stability, but remember these aren’t DIY projects and need to be left to a pro. 

When sourced responsibly, the most sustainable wood decking options are timber trees like redwood, pine, Douglas fir, Nootka cypress, and Western red cedar. These tree species are fast-growing with low carbon emissions. Plus, most timber woods make durable deck materials because of their resistance to rot and decay over time. 

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.
