"I’ve never had a contractor show up on time! Every time! This was a large job and he handled every detail from landscape lighting to plant selection perfectly. It is beautiful! Blaine did the design and had ideas I never would have dreamed could be in our budget. The hard scape with pavers, building stone and rocks is prettier than I imagined. He suggested adding a bubbler rock with cathedral stone and it is the perfect addition of a fountain without the fuss. Cant wait to see it in the spring when everything is blooming!"

Architects questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you should hire a draftsperson for simpler projects like minor home renovations, and you should hire an architect for new construction, structural changes to your home, and large home add-ons. If you’re working on a larger project that demands an architect or structural engineer, your professional will often have a draftsperson on staff and include their services in your estimate.

Hiring a contractor with knowledge about historic renovations and reviewing their previous work is important. You can find a historic home renovation contractor by calling your local historic preservation office, historical society, or any local historic museums nearby. The staff may have suggestions for specialized contractors who have worked for them. You can also ask them about historic home restorations that you have seen and liked in your area to get recommendations for pros.

While you will always work with a team of professionals at some point during your home build, homeowners with experience can take on some part of the process. Manage the initial brainstorm, brief writeup, and floor layout phase with minimal assistance before contacting a general contractor. And while you can purchase stock blueprints for some home designs, it's always best to speak with professionals when choosing one ideal for your property.

Start by researching local contractors with experience in cottage construction. Ask for references, check licensing and insurance, and review completed projects. Compare multiple bids, making sure each includes the same scope of work. A good contractor will communicate clearly, provide a detailed contract, and ensure all work meets code and safety standards.

Italianate architecture is a reinterpretation of Renaissance styles, combining elements of Italian farmhouses and villas with Victorian materials and construction. This home style emerged in the Victorian era, gaining popularity in the U.S. in the mid-to late-1800s. The style came about in response to what many then viewed as the too-rigid and stuffy Classical style designs.
