"Rather than fix the issue the first 2 calls, more refrigerant was pumped into the system. This cost me $75 for each call plus the cost of the refrigerant. The 3rd time, they fixed a valve and refilled the refrigerant and I am monitoring to see if this really fixed the problem. So I am out $225 for service calls fro the same problem and the cost of the refrigerant. I think they take this approach intentionally."

No. In fact, some owners prefer to “summerize” their hot tubs and use them primarily over winter to enjoy the contrast of cold and hot water. It’s possible to keep the tub filled and running year-round, and some pros may even recommend this method compared to the work and risks of a full winterization every year.

However, keeping the hot tub running will require additional resources. You’ll use more power and more chemicals to keep it in good shape. Weigh the pros and cons of your situation before making a decision.

Where you drain a hot tub largely depends on local regulations, but you must not drain chemically treated water where it can damage the environment. Direct the water toward a sanitary sewer drain that will take it to a treatment facility. If your lawn has a dedicated drainage area that’s free from plants and foundations, you can likely drain it there. Avoid storm drains, as the hot tub water will enter waterways and could hurt aquatic life. Likewise, do not pour it out directly on any public land or where it can get into your neighbors’ property. 

You can drain a hot tub very quickly by using a submersible pump rather than the hose-sized drain at the bottom exterior of the tub. A pump can move up to 30 gallons per minute, draining your hot tub in no time. Using the regular drain can take up to two hours.

Hot tub repair costs are less expensive than purchasing a new one, especially if your warranty is still intact. You can shop for a secondhand unit or find a deal for a trade-in. If the price to repair your hot tub is higher than the cost of a new one, consider replacing your unit.

When your hot tub is not in use, you can keep it at a constant soaking temperature of around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. For extended periods of non-use, you can lower the temperature by about five degrees. This slight decrease makes it easier and quicker to heat back up to a desirable level when you're ready to use it again. Additionally, you might consider lowering the temperature by a couple of degrees during the summer to avoid feeling overheated.
