"Used a shop vac to sweep what they did get out, leaving a coat of dust on everything in our living room. Used 1 sponge they wet once to clean. We were quoted $75, with multiple discussions on what they could do. Explained all the $75 was for inspection and sweep from the top of chimney, which we had removed last year. $600 for a deep cleaning and then tried to charge $1200. If this was a deep cleaning, I ll eat my hat. We signed contract with no amount on it."

Your chimney needs a structurally sound chimney cap, protective lining, damper, chimney flashing, and brick and mortar to prevent water from goind down your chimney. A pro can help you identify where the issue is so that you can stop water from coming down the smoke shaft, through your damper, and into your home.

Ideally, your chimney cap should be at least 8 inches above the top of the flue, though it's better if it's even higher. You want it to sit that high because it won't affect the chimney's draft, which pulls the smoke up and out of your chimney and away from your home.

With regular maintenance, a brick chimney can last 50 to 100 years. However, the various parts of the chimney—including the liner, mortar, and flashing—tend to have shorter lifespans. Or, you can place a container of charcoal inside the fireplace to absorb odors. Just be sure to remove it before it’s time to start using the fireplace again.
