"They gave me a quick and detailed quote and showed up to do the work when they said they would. Part of the project was anchoring the driveway extension into the existing driveway with rebar. They would not have done it at all had I not walked out and asked right before they started pouring concrete. We had asked for the driveway to be level as it is an RV parking spot. It was not level. They cleaned up the work nice for the most part, except for one of the workers digging a shallow hole in our backyard and dumping excess concrete into it. I had to dig it out and re-plant the grass. Also, part of the quote was a saw cutting the driveway. I had to call 3 or 4 times and wait a few weeks to get this done. He completed the job well for the most part... but not without my oversight and prodding. I should not have had to do that."

Customers say: True professional

"The project went wonderfully. In June of 2024, Hegedus Hardscapes removed an old 1970’s porch, and installed a beautiful, new Unilock porch with adequate drainage, using adequate pitch and new pipes. The overall look is exceptional, like a European grotto, with a perimeter edged in sandstone. Hegedus Hardscapes is a family business, whose members all work hard, and to a high standard. If you are a picky customer and find it hard to locate an outdoor contractor with standards as high as yours, then, look no further; Hegedus Hardscapes is the company for you!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

If you’re looking for a similar, eco-friendly driveway material, you might consider one of these options:

  • Permeable pavement: This material is sometimes called “pervious” or “porous” pavement; it allows stormwater to drain into the subbase, eliminating storm drain costs.

  • Gravel: Consider paving your driveway with locally sourced gravel. By sourcing from a nearby source, your money won’t fund international shipping and will be invested back into your local community.

  • Natural stone pavers: Because natural stone pavers are made from organically-produced stone, there’s no new manufacturing required, limiting the environmental impact. In addition, water easily flows and drains through the gaps in the pavers.

When hiring an asphalt paving contractor to install your driveway, ask as many questions up front as possible. Here are a few questions to ask a prospective driveway contractor:

  • How many years of experience do you have?

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • Do you have worker’s compensation?

  • Do you use subcontractors on your projects?

  • Do you clean up after the job is done?

  • Who is responsible for any damage to lawn or landscaping?

  • Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • Do you give free estimates?

  • What is the timeline for completion?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • Can you provide at least three references?

  • Can I see some of the work you’ve done?

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

Asphalt driveways last anywhere from 15 to 30 years, but if you don’t stay on top of repairs, you may find yourself spending extra to replace your driveway before its typical lifespan. Stay on top of repairing cracks and potholes by routinely inspecting your driveway once or twice a year. It’s a good idea to pressure wash your asphalt driveway at least once a year to keep it clean. Apply a sealer every one to five years, based on your climate.

While some areas may allow for a slope of up to 20%, this is often the maximum slope for driveways, with a few exceptions of up to 25%. Other regions may have a maximum of 12%, 15%, or 18%, so check with your local building department to ensure you’re laying a driveway that is up to code for your location.
