"I needed to have my sprinkler system winterized. After a couple of failed attempts with other companies returning my phone calls, I connected with Sunrise Irrigation. Scheduled the appointment and Mike showed up and took care of everything. He made a couple of good recommendations to improve the system and identified a hole in one of my lines. He marked it and indicated I should fix in the spring. I will definitely be calling Sunrise Irrigation to fix the system before next season."

No, carpetgrass and St. Augustine grass are two different species. However this is a very common misconception and you may even find St. Augustine grass is mislabeled as carpetgrass. Carpetgrass does not have as much shade tolerance as St. Augustine grass, and has narrower blades with an alternating pattern (while St. Augustine grass has an opposite pattern). St. Augustine grass doesn’t have the weedy, high seedheads that carpetgrass produces.

You can thicken new grass by using fertilizer, watering it 1 to 1½ inches per week, mowing when it is at an optimal height, and preventing weeds. You should fertilize your grass while you plant the grass seed, or soon afterward. Use an herbicide to prevent weeds or spot spray with herbicide to kill existing weeds.

Stick to your watering schedule. As long as new grass is getting plenty of water from irrigation, it shouldn’t need watering right after you cut it. Watch for signs like yellowing grass that shows a new lawn isn’t getting enough water and needs more regular irrigation. If you want to water after mowing, wait until the afternoon. Hot, direct sunlight can scorch grass more easily when it’s wet, so it’s better to wait until the day has cooled off.

If carpetgrass is regularly cut, it looks very similar to centipedegrass and St. Augustine grass, and people may confuse them. Carpetgrass blades are flat and rounded at the tip. Note that the grass only typically grows as a weed in Southern states.

Many experts say anytime before 10 a.m. is a good time to water grass, but this does depend a bit on the climate conditions where you live. For example, if you live in South Florida and it’s already 95 degrees by 7:30 a.m., it may simply be too hot to effectively water your lawn, regardless of what the time is.
