Customers say: Quality work

"They pressure washed, brushed two coats of stain on our cedar house, painted doors and windows, and replaced rotten wood. They were helpful, did excellent work and are very thorough. The only complaint we had was that they started seven weeks later than their original proposed start date."

"OSS completed a large exterior upgrade project at my 92-year-old home in Mt. Lookout. I canรข t say enough good things about the job they did. The surfaces ranged from stucco, wood trim, wood decking, composite decking, and concrete. The level of attention to detail was fantastic. The stucco was repaired and caulking was done where needed and all exterior lighting was replaced. All interactions were extremely professional. Evan and Orlando are a pleasure to work with. I received all pricing in writing before and after completion, and everything was completed timely. All materials used were high quality. Eva was extremely responsive to every question I had throughout the job. Pricing was very competitive and it was worth every penny for the job done. Iรข ve highly recommended OSS to neighbors and coworkers and will contract with them for any future painting jobs."

"I dealt with Tim for the price and project details and then Jeff was the man who came out to do the job. The deck had previously been done by a guy who did not know what he was doing so Jeff power washed the entire deck and let it dry for 24 hours, then he sanded the deck and scrubbed it down with denatured alcohol to help remove any remaining paint from before. When the deck was dry, Jeff taped off everything and proceeded to edge everything before he rolled a nice thick layer of paint on the deck. We waited another 24 hours and Jeff returned to apply a nice second coat of paint on the entire deck. Tim and Jeff are very easy to work with and I will most certainly come back to them for future projects."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan, typically by five to 10 years. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it can still fall victim to moisture, sun exposure, and rot over time. Applying a treatment creates a protective shield that helps prevent splintering, fading, and decay, preserving the wood's strength and appearance. A combination stain and sealer often provides the best protection, as it soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on top. This offers superior defense against UV damage and rot and lasts longer than a sealer alone. To maintain the wood's natural look, consider using a near-translucent stain. You should plan to reapply the stain or sealer every two to three years.

DIY staining or painting is manageable with proper preparation, including safety measures, necessary tools, and adherence to safe weather conditions for application.

Essential tools include brushes or rollers, drop cloths, sandpaper or power sanders, and appropriate cleaning supplies. Quality materials ensure long-lasting results.

While the answer varies based on weather, 10 a.m. is a good time to start painting. The dew will have dried, meaning there’s no moisture on the house, and the temperature will likely be moderate and the sunlight less direct. Starting mid-morning should also give you enough daylight and pleasant weather to work on the job for several hours.

A properly applied coat of stain will last between 3 and 8 years, depending on your climate. If you live in a place where your fence experiences a lot of moisture or high heat, your stain will last for a shorter period than in more temperate conditions. We recommend reapplying stain every 3 to 5 years to keep your wood in good condition.
