A tree growing close to a house can cause problems, but cutting it down isn’t always the best solution. Trees planted close to your home could damage your foundation as their roots grow. Grinding a stump will also produce chips that you can use as mulch or to cover up the hole that the process leaves behind.

Some fast-acting products can rot a tree stump in four to six weeks. Keep in mind, these products contain harsh chemicals that may prevent regrowth in the area. Other products, like fertilizer that contains lots of nitrogen, can enhance the process and rot a stump in about a year. (This is compared to the ten years it can take naturally for a stump to rot.)

Manual removal is the only method that includes removing the tree’s roots. Otherwise, root removal is considered a separate job—and depending on the complexity of your root system, you can expect to pay between $100 and $200 per hour for a tree professional to remove roots safely.

The cost to buy a stump grinder can fall anywhere between $1,450 and $19,800, with the majority of models priced below $3,000. However, grinders designed for construction or extensive commercial use might exceed $100,000 in cost. Prices vary based on the type of grinder, the brand, features, and other factors.
