My niche is medium jobs - jobs where extremely heavy equipment is too big but something bigger than hand tools are needed for hardscaping, property maintenance, drainage, and clearing. A few years ago I moved from the city to a mostly unmaintained five acre property and enjoy doing property maintenance projects so much I started offering residential and commercial property maintenance services. I have a subcompact tractor-loader-backhoe and several medium sized clearing and mowing implements, an enclosed 16 foot trailer, and related yard and hand tools.

Pavers and Hardscaping questions, answered by experts

If you wish to break up a cracked or broken paver for removal, you can use a hammer or mallet and a chisel to fragment the paver. As you’re working, be careful not to disturb surrounding pavers; the key is to work slowly and steadily and remove the broken pieces gently. You should also wear a mask and goggles to ensure that no dust gets into your eyes, nose, or mouth as you work.

Water that pools under pavers can erode the soil foundation and weaken the paver structure. In some situations, it can also cause mold and mildew growth. If that happens, you may need to start budgeting for the cost to build and install a patio to replace the damaged one.

The cost depends on the type of natural stone. High-end stones can cost as much as porcelain, but it depends on the specific material. For example, the cost of flagstone pavers is typically $2 to $6 per square foot, which is much more budget-friendly than porcelain. Outdoor slate tile can cost as much as $35 per square foot, which is about the same as porcelain.

Costs depend on material type, design complexity, and site preparation requirements.

Deciding between concrete, stone, or brick pavers comes down to your budget and the ease of installation. Concrete is the least expensive material, followed by brick and then natural stone. Concrete pavers are also the easiest to install, but bricks are relatively easy as well. Stone pavers require more time and labor because their natural shapes make them harder to fit together. Professional stoneworkers, however, are able to shape them as needed.
