"I recommend Carlton highly if you need any help with your countertops. We wanted an unused curved seating area removed on our kitchen counter to make the space more accessible. I called several countertop companies before I knew about Carlton and none returned my calls. I feel fortunate that I found Carlton because of his expertise at modifying and restoring stone, and he handles these custom jobs that countertop companies won’t touch. He replied to my initial inquiry within hours, came out to see the space first, and was able to work our job into his schedule in just a few days. He’s professional and manages the job while on-site very well. And he’s just a nice guy. Don’t hesitate to reach out to Carlton – you’ll be very happy with the results."

"I can t say enough about the owner, Shad. I had marble floors that were scratched, cracked and pitted. Shad worked endless hours on our floors to make them look brand new. I am shocked at the difference. Shad is all about making the customer happy , he is detailed oriented and takes pride in his work. Customer service is excellent. I highly recommend this company for restoration of flooring, ceramic, and stone/ granite countertops. I was a tough customer and Shad nailed every component of this job. So happy!! Great company. Thank you Shad !! Highly recommend. I can t say enough!!"

"Had an appointment the next day after the first contact. Our granite countertops were extremely dull in a few places from previous home owner, now they are bright and shiny."

"Mr. Thompson rebuilt the steps to code including pitching the steps so that water drained away from my foundation. He used new brick and built several footers as well as using the flip-side of my existing stone pads that saved me approximately $900. I felt the price while higher than I anticipated was fair as another contractor was going to charge up to $2200 for just a repair that would not have solved the problem."

"I bought a $99 coupon for John Downey Carpet Cleaning service from Angie's List, and it was a bargain! What a great job John Grabowski did. My 25-year old beige carpets had never been professionally cleaned, and there were stains I assumed were permanent. I even told John not to worry about them; I just needed the living room, den, stairs and upstairs hallway given a once over. An hour later, it was like I had a new carpet! The coffee stains were gone, too.
I was able to get an appointment within a week of my making the call; another plus. John showed up on time, and was very pleasant. I would recommend him again without hesitation.

Stone Countertops questions, answered by experts

The frequency for sealing granite countertops depends on several factors, including the type of sealant used, the color of the granite, and how heavily the countertops are used. As a general guideline, resealing is often recommended every 12 to 18 months, but some sources suggest it could be as often as every few months or at least once a year.

The type of sealant is a major factor: water-based sealants may need reapplication every six months to a year, while more durable solvent-based sealants can last for five to 10 years. Additionally, factors like heavy kitchen traffic, frequent use of acidic cleaners, and lighter granite colors may require more frequent sealing to prevent staining.

To determine if your countertops need resealing, you can perform a simple water test. Place a few drops of water or a wet paper towel on an inconspicuous area of the granite. After 10 to 15 minutes, check the spot. If the water has beaded up, the seal is still intact. If the water has been absorbed and darkened the stone, it's time to apply a new coat of sealant. You can choose to seal the granite yourself or hire a professional to ensure it's done correctly.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.

The cost of granite countertops is around $3,250 for most homeowners, but you could pay as low as $500 or over $4,000, depending on the size of your project and some other factors. In addition to the square feet of granite you need, your pricing will also depend on the following:

  • Granite thickness

  • Quality and rarity of the granite, labeled in levels from one to five

  • Granite color and texture

  • Countertop design

Marble is a porous natural stone that needs sealant to minimize staining. Leaving this type of countertop material sealant-free means any liquids left on the surface will quickly absorb into the stone, discoloring it and dulling the sheen. Dark or acidic liquids, like red wine, coffee, and lemon, are the worst culprits.

Fortunately, there are many types of heatproof countertops. Granite, quartzite, concrete, and stainless steel are all fiery contenders. These surfaces work best in busy kitchens where hot pots, pans, and baking sheets are part of the daily routine. Plus, their durability means you get a long-lasting work surface that won’t flinch at a bit of heat or heavy use. However, many stone and concrete counters require a sealer, which is typically not heatproof.
