"I don't remember exact dates... but I originally contacted Thompson's Masonry in May 2013.  Bob came out in early June 2013 and wrote an estimate.  We originally just wanted tuckpointing, but since it was a smaller job and that alone wouldn't be worth his time, he suggested fixing the crack in the front porch at the same time.  He seemed very knowledgeable and for both tuckpointing and concrete repair, his estimate was reasonable.  We scheduled the job for mid-July.  I remember there was some back-and-forth in trying to get a hold of the company throughout the process of getting the estimate and scheduling... but nothing I would consider unreasonable for a busy small business.
When the time came for the job, Thompson's was backlogged with work due to all the rain we got in July that pushed back other jobs.  I wasn't happy about having to reschedule, but our repairs weren't an emergency and I'm understanding that no one can control the weather. Even though the date got pushed back and there were some communication issues, I still felt Thompson's Masonry was the best of the businesses we received estimates from.
The work was finally done on September 6 and it was worth the wait!  Bob was very thorough.  He walked around the entire house with me inspecting every bit of exposed brick.  He repaired small cracks that I wouldn't have even noticed until they became bigger issues.  I was happy to have it all taken care of at once.  The tuckpointing turned out great.  The color matches exactly.  In the picture I've included, the part they did is the vertical line.  The color on the concrete repair doesn't match quite as well... but it looks a LOT better than it did before!  They also sprayed all the brick with a sealer to repel water.
Overall, I'm very happy.  Thompson's Masonry definitely exceeded our expectations!

"Everything went smoothly from the estimate of work we received  from Jerry to solve our problem right down to the crew that came to do the work. They arrived promptly and were very professional in their work. Sanders, the foreman, explained to us what work was being done and updated us as the work progressed putting in the drain tile, installing the weep hole cove protection and re-cementing the basement floor.  He was very professional in answering our questions about the work being performed. They were very cautious in covering up our things with plastic to protect against the "dust" when the concrete was removed to expose the floor for the drain tile and cleaned up very well when the work was completed - both in the basement and in the driveway.

Concrete Resurfacing questions, answered by experts

Stamped concrete is durable and relatively easy to maintain. Regular maintenance includes sweeping away debris to keep it clean and prevent staining. It is also important to repair any cracks promptly to maintain its appearance and longevity. The concrete should be resealed every 2 to 4 years to protect the surface.

A layer of exposed aggregate concrete should be 1 to 2 inches thick if you’re installing it on top of existing concrete. If you’re pouring a new slab with the finish, slab thickness will depend on the application. Exposed aggregate concrete driveways should be 4 to 6 inches thick in most cases or 8 to 12 inches for commercial vehicles. Sidewalks, patios, and walkways should be 4 inches thick.

If your concrete steps have crumbled or chipped, you can fix them by removing any chips or flakes, cleaning and wetting the affected area, applying a concrete bonding agent, and finally applying new concrete, usually in the form of Portland cement. For widespread damage, you can consider concrete resurfacing instead. For fixing concrete spalling that has led to deep damage, you might need to remove damaged material, add structural supports, and pour new concrete into a mold.

Deciding whether to repair, resurface, or replace your concrete driveway depends on its age, condition, and the cost of the potential work.

If your driveway is over 20 years old and showing significant deterioration, replacement is often the best option. Similarly, if the cost of repairs is 50% or more of the replacement value, it's more cost-effective to replace it. For newer concrete with minor issues, resurfacing can be a good choice, especially if you have maintained it well with regular sealing.

For a definitive recommendation, contact a reputable concrete contractor. They can assess the driveway's condition and advise whether repair, resurfacing, or a full replacement (which costs between $1,400 and $12,100) is the most sensible path.

The repair method for a damaged concrete patio depends on the type of damage. For surface cracks, a concrete crack filler is a quick and simple fix. For larger cracks or uneven slabs, you may need to hire a professional to pump a cementitious material under the sunken portion to lift it back into place. For heavy spalling and other surface damage, resurfacing may be the best and most affordable option. This includes pouring a new layer of concrete over the old layer.
