"I just used Anthony Smith with Elite Handyman Plus LLC to remodel my very outdated bathroom and I can't say enough good things about him as a professional and about the quality of his work! My first meeting with him he actually shared ways for me to save money on the cost to remodel. Once he accepted the job and we got through a supply snafu on my part, he was here within a week to get started. I did the demo prior to him coming in to put it all back together. I provided all the materials he would need (excluding tools), he provided the skill and talent. He tiled the walls around my tub, put in a new floor, toilet, and vanity, and put wainscoting up on my walls. And, he did the plumbing for the new vanity faucet & spigot and the new exposed riser shower/tub filler faucet & spigots for the tub! It looks absolutely wonderful and I love it! He was here for 3 full days, he was here when he said he'd be here, he cleaned up after himself all 3 days, and he worked all day on the days he was here. I would recommend this contractor in a heartbeat."

"Excellent - I ended up hiring someone to help with shopping and finishing piece - waste of time and money. Jill's service was by far the most useful and best value in my decorating process.

"This bathroom renovation is the third time we have used Gary for various home projects. He and his two workmen were very friendly, polite and knowledgable in their work. I believe that the fact we used him three times speaks highly of them. I consider their work to be top notch. I definately would use them again should the need arise."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

When working on your bathroom floor tiling, you should always tile the floor first and then refit the toilet afterward. This has both practical and visual advantages—the tile will have a better seal, and the installation will look cleaner.

On the other hand, when you try to cut the tiles to fit around the toilet, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. It’s a lot more work, it’s hard to be precise, and mistakes or miscalculations can lead to future moisture damage to the tiling, grout, and subfloor.

The cost to install porcelain tile is about $1,930 on average. Porcelain tile prices range from $880 to $3,000 or more. The average cost tends to be higher than ceramic tile because porcelain tile is very durable. Porcelain tile rating also factors into the material cost. Tile ratings are as follows:

  • Grade 0: Walls only

  • Grade 1: Walls and light traffic floors

  • Grade 2: Rooms with light traffic, but not kitchens or hallways

  • Grade 3: Kitchens, hallways, and entryways

  • Grade 4: Any area, interior or exterior

  • Grade 5: Highest durability good for any area, interior or exterior

You have creative freedom when it comes to your tile trim. If, however, you are considering skipping tile trim, please think twice about that. It is good practice to install tile trim, whether on walls or flooring. Think, too, about the aesthetic you are going for and choose a trim type and color that will help enhance the space.

When choosing between porcelain and ceramic tile, the best option depends on your specific needs, budget, and project application. Porcelain tile is generally more durable, denser, and harder than ceramic, making it a good choice for busy, high-traffic areas. It also offers superior moisture resistance, making it ideal for moisture-retaining spaces. However, porcelain is typically more expensive, and its hardness can make it brittle, potentially causing it to crack if a heavy object is dropped on it. In contrast, ceramic tile is a more budget-friendly option with lower material and installation costs. It is softer and easier to work with, making it a great choice for DIY projects. While not as durable as porcelain, ceramic is still a quality material suitable for many home applications, particularly small, decorative projects.

The best trowel for penny tile is a 3/16-inch-by-5/32-inch V-notch trowel. Because of the small size of the penny tile, you want a trowel with small notches that can lay a thin layer of mortar on the surface you’re tiling. If the notches are too wide, you risk applying too thick of a layer of mortar, and it can squeeze out between the penny tiles.
