"Ruddy Ducts called me the same day to set up an appointment for them to evaluate my AC unit. Discussed fee up front. JOSH returned within hours to repair the AC unit to working condition. Very courteous and professional in my opinion. I would definitely recommend them for HVAC services."

"The provider showed up in the estimated window and was very respectful of my house (coverings on his boots and he avoided wall/door damage while moving equipment). He cleaned/sanitized my basement HVAC system, my upstairs HVAC system, and finally my dryer vent. There was a little difficulty with the dryer vent cap on the roof (improper cap was installed prior to this service), so he performed the dryer vent cleaning from inside. I appreciate the adaptability.

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

It depends on the specifics of your warranty. The motor is likely not covered if you’re working with a limited warranty. The same goes for other components like the compressor and evaporator coil. Some extended warranties will cover the blower and fan motor, so read the fine print before signing up. Additionally, the manufacturer may offer a warranty for the parts, including the motor, though there’s likely to be a strict time limit for this coverage.

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years

The outdoor portions of air conditioners are designed to weather the rain, so you don’t need to worry about it. An awning or roof will help protect them from snow or falling debris, which can do more damage. This is true of both window AC and outdoor units for larger systems.

If refrigerant levels are low, it can cause the evaporator coil to freeze up. Low freon causes a drop in pressure, which will make the coil too cold and cause moisture to freeze on the coil. Your system may be low on refrigerant because of a leak

Make sure to have maintenance performed twice a year, and contact your local HVAC technician if you suspect your system has low freon levels.

The cost to add Freon to an AC ranges from $100 to $350. It can increase up to $600 for large AC units requiring much more coolant. The cost also depends on how much refrigerant your unit needs. If only a small amount of Freon leaked out, your cost would be on the lower side. A complete replacement of all the required refrigerant can get expensive.
