For best results, you should remove the toilet in a bathroom before removing tile or installing new tile. If you don’t remove the toilet, it will be harder to fully waterproof the tile around the toilet, which could increase the risk of mold growth or plumbing leaks. If the drain is frozen, the pipes connecting to the washing machine are likely frozen. If the hot water trick doesn’t also unfreeze the washing machine pipes, you can gently apply heat with a hair dryer on the lowest setting. Start at the end of the pipe closest to the faucet to prevent pressure from building in the pipes, and make sure the faucet is open to drain the water as it melts.
At most, polybutylene pipes last 10 to 15 years. The material is simply not durable enough to withstand some of the chemical elements found in our water supply, such as fluoride and chlorine. These pipes tend to deteriorate quickly and lead to leaks or even pipe bursts.
